Is it illegal to sort in Canada and bring the coppers over the border. I think I remember a law against bringing over a certain amount of change but I don't remember.

I believe you can take up to $10,000 in Canadian coinage across the border. That's a lot of pennies

Nate is right - up to $10,000 and you don't need to even declare cash.

c140cessna brought back 2500 lbs of pennies from Canada. He was detained by the boarder patrol for a short time, but was allowed to continue with his loot.

No, It is not illegal to bring Canadain coin back into the states. You can bring as much as you want! Just make sure that you declare anything over $10K.

This year I brought Canadain coin back into Canada. I was over the limit so I had to declare it all. The customs people weren't the nicest people, but that is there job! Overall it took me about 10 minutes to get through. They just ask you a lot a lot a lot of questions!
