I bought a 3 Morgan dollar collection in a hard case.

1879 S, 1880 S, 1881 S

The 1879 S has a partial rainbow toning to her crown.

Does this add much to the value. What causes that? I read about it somewhere before but forgot.

Toning can add value, usually the ones that have more dramatic toning are the most desirable to those who look for toned coins.

Toning is just different amounts of silver sulfide. Eventually if left in the environment that produced the silver sulfide will cause the coin to turn black.

I believe some of the most wildly toned coins actually came from mint sewn bags that remained stationary for decades.

I know its probably hard to tell the exact grade of my coins. Would you have a guess on grade/value and if the toning plays any impact?

Well with the pics as they are and looking thru a capital holder. I would think AU. $20.00 each. All 3 are considered common date. The one that is toned, you could try to sell on Ebay, but fees would probably eat into your profit. Natually toned coins can get a decent price there on occassion. It's really hit or miss.

Back to the grade. With more pics and of both sides, I could see MS62ish or about $30.00...

I don't think all toning is silver sulfide. Like there is toning from PVC that just turns the coin black.

And I've seen lots of graded/pcgs/ngc coins that are crazy colors that I think were done by somebody with chemicals and an oven intentionally to make the coins more valuable. In other words, doctored coins.

But if collectors think they are worth more, then I guess they are. But I'll stick with clean coins and rainbow masterpieces on canvas, not silver.
