I posted just a little earlier about finding a 1950 D nickel.
In the same lot of nickels I just found a 1939D and knew it was the other key date. I was so excited so I called my brother. I had called him earlier and had to leave a voice message about the 1950 D.
This time he was home and I told him about just finding the 1939D and he said now you have two of the five key dates. He starts telling me the other key dates and I ask him to hold on while I look through the little baggie of nickels I had set aside tonight. In the baggie was a 1938 D, a 1938 S, and a 1939 S. He tells me those are the other three of the five key dates. Not knowing myself, I have to accept his knowledge from having been a coin collector for about 50 years.
The 1938s and the 1939s are nowhere near the great condition that the 1950 D is in but according to my brother if you find a 1950 D nickel it usually will be in AU condition or better as these were hoarded as it appears our 2009 nickels and dimes are as well.
He tells me he had to buy each one of those key dates. I'm still shaking my head in disbelief and my hands are shaking so much from excitement!!!
WOW!!! I guess Christmas came early for me!

Congrats on your nickel finds! Looks like the Nickle Santa visited you. The 2 you found are the toughest 2, and your brother is right about the other 3. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Actually I found all five nickels this afternoon/evening from one lot of nickels. I'm going to search back through the five rolls to make sure I didn't accidentally put any good dates back in the rolls before I take them to the bank. Yikes!!! Besides not being able to see very well, not being well educated on the key dates can be extremely dangerous!
Good Luck to everyone in your searches. |

| Usually a find like that is someone dumping a collection. If you get all the key dates in one box, think about it. The odds of this are one in a billion. Nice job and congrats! |

Actually, all five key dates were found in a bag of $11.05 worth of nickels, not even a box, I had gotten on Friday from the guy at the coin shop for five cents less than total face value.
