I "stopped" sorting a while ago, but the tellers at my bank keep asking me if I would like to buy more bags of pennies - even when I go through drive thru, I always end up with a bag or two. I got rid of both ryedales and now have 21 bags to sort 3 months later. I started to sort by hand again when I was out on injury from work. Well, found in first bag a blank, 1917s among 47 wheats, Dominican Republic cent, and what appears to be a mercury coated 1959. I know I have enough coppers, but its all about the treasure hunt... a weakness of mine. I should just send my wife to the bank, but they know who she is. The Copper percentage of that bag was 37% ... that didn't help either

how did you know that... only 3 months and I miss it a lot. Funny thing is that it sold for nearly the amount I paid for it... |

I used 10 gallon plastic totes - flexible color type. I am converting back to cloth bank bags filled with 50 lbs copper. I have 2 bags with nothing but 1982 coppers from older sorts - pre machine. Using cloth was a better idea because I plan I giving my kids the stash. There are 2 types of coin hoarders in my opinion. 1. preservationist - to preserve coinage for various reasons including selling to collectors after supply is dwindled. 2. anticipationist - to sell or melt for profit mostly on short term basis. The real difference between the two is how they handle the goods... The preservationist is more inclined to hand sort through the stash and make a melt pile versus save pile... Even the preservationist knows when coins are better off melted and to make a quick profit. I hope to be passing knowledge and wealth to my kids. Just think... if you inherited a large stash of silver coins collected before the great 1964 scam... |

A man of few posts, but a legend never the less.
Any way you could post a couple of photos of your hoard? |

Welcome back Bill. Glad to see you return. How did you do it? I mean go cold turkey for 3 months. I couldn't do it.
I really liked those pics of your hoard too.
You could just use the mint bags like I do.. just put 1 ton of copper in each bag after you have throughly sorted through it. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |

its nuts like you guys that keep going... I am getting old and sorting by hand hurts the back ... oh well.... if I die, at least I will be having fun . I am attacking a tote tonight with nothing but wheats in it . These are the ones I pulled when zinc pennies dodn't exist. Hey... this reminds me of an auction I went to where the auctioneer was selling a milk can full of wheats, and it just hit me.... thats a great idea for a container except on thing... wouldn't that cause a rusting process due to two metals being connected? By the way... the milk can went for 700+ dollars which I thought was ridiculous... |

Actually that probably wasn't that bad of a buy. If it was a full sized milk can like they sell around here it would have held 4 to 5 bags if it was full to the top. So the person that bought it probably only paid about $150.00 per bag. |
