What year will have more pennies minted 1982 or 2009? Anyone know how many 2009's were made? Also with the new design in 2010 how many pennies will they make for that year?

In 1982 16.7 billion pennies were made. January - November of this year there have only been 2 billion pennies (first 3 designs) made according to Coinnews.net You must be logged in to see this link.
Looks like the 2009 pennies will be rare (by penny standards) |

If I had to guess on the 2010 cents, I would say "as many as they possibly can." Despite making them at a loss, they are gonna pump out as many as possible; this new design will probably be saved by collectors and non-collectors alike. I bet they will make more than 2-3 billion like this year. They won't have to stop to change designs. Unless the new design proves problematic and needs retooled or whatever.
The 2009's so far are all in the 280-380 million range per mint per design. Very few Lincolns since the beginning of the memorial design have had a mintage under a half billion. Doesn't sound rare, but yeah... by penny standards...
And did you know that 1982 was the first year that the output from one mint (Philadelphia, with help from West Point and San Fran, both making identical 'plain' cents) was over ten billion? Ten billion... so... many... coins! |

| The 2009 mintages are comparatively low, but I'm sure a large number are being saved. |

| I predict that the 2010 cent mintages will be 3-4 million, higher than 2009 but lower than 2008. |

I too would count on LOTS being saved.
Who can say about how many zinc cents will be made in 2010 or 2011. But I don't zinc cents last longer than 2011. |

It is interesting to read that totalcount's link contains the following (emphasis mine):
"Offical numbers for the fourth 2009 Lincoln Presidency cent are yet to be discovered since the coins are still being minted. However, by taking the total amount of pennies produced and then backing out the published mintages for the first three designs, it is known that (to date) there has been at least 198 million struck in Denver and 129.6 million from Philadelphia. Most of these were produced in October given that just 61.6 million pennies were minted in November. Clearly, the Lincoln Presidency penny has the potential of being the most scarce unless production is drastically ramped up this month."
The magic number is 258,270,000. If either or both of the type-fours ends up less than that, they will surpass the 1968S as the lowest non-proof cents made since the wheat years. |

I have considered making an offer to buy hand-sorted 1982 cents, in order to get a better picture of their relative rarity as compared to each other. I can't afford to do that right now though... but if you keep 'em, maybe someday... |

| The real question that needs to be brought to light is, How many ZINC 82's were minted compared to the 2009 ZINCS. Remember that the 82 coppers should not be counted in the same as thye zincs. This is something that has puzzled me for a couple years now. Don't you think the mintage for the 82's in either copper or zinc would make them a low mintage coin in each category? Say there is a total of 100 million minted and say half were copper and half were zinc. That would make them a little more rare than most would think. |

None of the 1982's are rare, per se. Here's what I know so far.
Timeline of the 1982 cent
All mints began the year producing large date cents.
January 7: West Point mints zinc cents from the start. Total WP mintage 1,990,005,000. No mint mark.
Soon after, Philadelphia switched from copper to zinc. Total Philadelphia mintage 7,135,275,000. Nearly 600 million per month, or 19.5 million a day.
San Francisco mints 1,587,245,000 zinc cents for circulation. No mint mark. San Francisco (S) also struck nearly 4,000,000 proof cents, all large date copper.
September 3: all mints switch to small dates.
October 21: Denver switched from copper to zinc.
October 27: first Denver zinc cents are delivered. Total Denver mintage: 6,012,979,368. Assumed production of 1-1.2 billion Denver zinc small dates. |

| Thanks for doing all that homework and posting it here. As I see it now, there is no shortage in any account whether zinc or copper in the 82's. |

The Mint did not strike a single coin of any denomination in December 2009!
The final mintages for 2009 cents is 2.354 billion, all four types summed together. This is half of the 2008 cent mintage. The LP4 mintages are still unknown as of now. |

Taking that as fact, these are the comparative mintages of the 8 types, in millions. T4P... 129.6 T4D... 198 T1P... 284.4 T3P... 316 T3D... 336 T1D... 350.4 T2D... 363.6 T2P... 376 (wouldn't you know it, the one sealed box I have is this type) |

Do you think the mint workers were furloughed during that period or were they still being paid with no coins being minted? Or would there be other work that they would need to be doing during that time frame?
I had a guy at the coin show tell me that the ones that push the buttons are paid $150.00 an hour. I find that difficult to believe but don't really know how or where to look, especially being hampered with this extremely slow dial-up. |

I visited this page on January 8th, and noted the Jan-Dec 2009 totals. Then I subtracted out the Jan-Nov 2009 totals previously displayed there in early December (and subsequently overwritten): You must be logged in to see this link. |
