I am sorting 4 boxes right now and I'm a little over 1/2 done. So far I have found 7 rolls that every penny has a dull rough texture. It is like they have been acid dipped or sand blasted. I am finding lots of copper in them but some as new as 2007. Does anyone have any ideas about what might have happened to them? Thanks
Maybe they are from a water fountain. I recently did a box that had roll after roll with water fountain pennies. many of them were very corroded. some had a crusty build-up of mineral deposit. They were all dull and rough.
I tend to think some kind of cleaning company. They almost look like they have been used in an electroplate setup. I ended up sorting 20ish rolls. They all had the same tone of color regardless of age. There was no corrosion on them but it made it hard to read the dates with no contrast and a rough raised surface. I never found a penny newer than 2007 and never found a wheat, but there was a higher percent of copper in the rolls. Because of the rough texture to the pennies they did not want to slide out of the roll wrappers.

The ones I get after being in a water fountain have this nasty white stuff on the coins and then the wrapper is full of it too. I just throw the whole roll in the zinc bin and dont bother even looking for copper. I've never felt a rough texture on any of these coins and I get multiple rolls of them a month. Just the minerals from the water on them.
