Buddha Statue Stolen for Scrap Metal The Associated Press Monday, September 3, 2007; 5:07 PM
ELK RIVER, Minn. -- The high demand and soaring prices for scrap metal appeared to be the reason a 7-foot statue of Buddha, covered in copper-laden bronze, was stolen from an outdoor temple shrine at the Thai Buddhist Center of Minnesota, police said.
Police Chief Jeff Beahen said a 45-year-old Elk River woman was arrested Friday night, and a male family member was being looked at as another suspect in the theft.
The statue, valued at $10,000, was stolen Wednesday night, and a detective issued a statewide alert to police and scrap dealers Thursday with a photo of the stolen statue.
Early Friday afternoon, a recycling company in Monticello called the detective, saying they had taken in two pieces of scrap they believed to be from the statue.
Police recovered the right shoulder and right hip of the statue, each weighing about 60 pounds, and with the help of the recycler were able to identify the woman who had brought them in.
"There are another 10 pieces or so, and I hope the other recycling companies are as diligent in talking with us," Beahen said.
The statue was specially made in Thailand for the center.
"It's too bad," said temple member Jay Cramer. "The whole community is real sad. It's a sacred piece."
But Cramer said there was some relief in knowing that the statue was stolen for money and not because of bigotry.
A new law took effect in Minnesota Aug. 1 requiring scrap dealers to keep detailed records of all transactions. Sellers must show state-issued IDs, and dealers must pay them with checks or electronic transfers and take pictures of them and their vehicles.

If you ask me, stealing a religious statue for greed is just as bad as stealing it for bigotry. There is no respect either way. |

Shame on any smelter or scrapyard that would accept a statue, church bell, memorial plaque, or civic metal piece. The scrapper in this story is the hero, but how many scrappers out there have lesser integrity?

I really think that most scrapper (buyers) are honest but those who aren't give the others a bad name. I say that mostly because when it was legal to melt coins most of the scrappers still refused to buy them. I think most of them just didn't want the hassel of having the local telvevision I team showing up and pointing a finger at them as the ones who were profiting by melting "America's" coinage.

I'd say that's true with any trade. People only focus on the bad aspects of pretty much anything. It's just more interesting and therefore makes the news or gossip circles or what have you. When once person or group of people screw up the whole suffer. |

I know. I've had several people give me scrap just so i would move it and they wouldn't have to do it. I hauled off ninety dollars worth for a woman not long ago.

There has been a huge copper theft problem where I live. Since Hurricane Katrina, often, as soon as the copper fixtures go into a new or restored house they get stolen. We even had a bronze statue stolen for scrap, but fortunately it was recovered...in pieces. The local governments are making people register and show ID to to scrap because of the problem.
mrcrazydeals, Are you for real?! This is the second time in two weeks I've seen someone register, post once linking junk sites and disappearing. I hope this isn't a trend. |

There is a simple solution to that problem. Since they want that copper so bad send a piece of copper jacketed lead at them at around 2900 fps. I'm not saying shoot them (unless you want to), but getting shot at has a tendency of making people think a little clearer.
