What is everyone's opinion on sorting quarters? Is it worth it?

I generally only sort halves, but didn't get any in November. I ended up picking up a bag if dimes and two bags of quarters. I found a silver 6 pence and a 1964 in the quarters. Does anyone ever fine anything better than this? The only other bag of quarters I ever got had 7 in it and I knew that an older woman had cashed them into the counter which is why I bought them.

Not worth it

The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities.

The higher the velocity the worse returns you will have, not worth it IMO.

Not worth it. Silver is very rare and customer rolls are frequently short costing you money.

I don't mess with quarters. Too many out there. All the state quarters really diluted the pool. Look at this post.

Look at page 1. oober has a month by month run down of the finds.

i do them occasionally in Canada when I can't get much other coin or when my wife wants to add to her collection of special quarter faces. The main reason is I find US quarters and make a couple cents profit of each one. The high velocity comment is exactly right.

Generally I would say they are not worth the trouble.. but the Silver Santa can visit any denomination this time of year. Quarters return the lowest percentage of silver and also have the highest probability that you will get shorted. Don't you just love getting a nickel in a roll in the place of 2 quarters?

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I have sorted a LOT of quarters and its simply not worth it. I found the average to be 1 silver quarter for every 3.5k searched.

Yeh, I found 1 silver quarter, one nickel, a bent penny and several arcade gaming tokins. I figured I bought the silver with the quarters that were missing.

If the true odds of finding silver in a bag of quarters is as low as we are finding from our data, the better method may to just ask for CWRs of quarters when doing bank pick ups. Almost as likely to find some silver randomly in a small set of rolls versus the whole enchilada of searching a $1000 bag. Personally, I prefer opening the rolls of quarters versus going through a bag. Takes less time to open the rolls and look for silver edges compared to pulling loose coins and lining them up in the light just right to see their edges. CWRs are nice too as you can immediately put the coins back in the wrappers after checking them.
