Has anyone ever bought gold off of craigslist? There aren't many ads selling.

One ad I found today:

All 5 Coins for one price. French 20 Franc 1840 (.1867 Oz), French 20 Franc 1842 (.1867 oz), British Sovereign 1911 (.2354 oz), US Liberty $5 1884 looks to be AU (.2420 Oz), and US Liberty $5 1892s also looks to be AU (.2420 oz) total Ounces of gold = 1.0928 approx. All coins are in very good condition. FYI, I do not need to be rescued by anyone. I am trimming a collection for a relative

Didnt seem like a bad deal for $1350 because of the 2 $5 liberty coins. What do you think?

Hi there-

Seems like a pretty good price unseen; I wouldn't drive 100 miles to get that deal, but any pre-33 for spot is definitely win. I'd jump on it.

Only when they CAN'T have it, ......THEN they'll want it.

I love Cents. If you get an UNC box, you win. If you get a regular circ. box, you win. If you get a zinc box, you don't lose....so you still win.

I recently read an article, I think it said U.S. $5 gold has highest instance of counterfeiting. If your not an expert it's probably better to stay away. Why would he sell at spot when he can go to any reputable coin dealer and get over spot?

I emailed him and asked if he would break up the 5 and he said he would.

I will break them up as they are not a set per se. Which ones are you interested in?

***
Would it be worth going for the foreign ones?

I have bought a 100 ounce silver bar off of craigs list. I paided cash he met me in a safe public place to make the exchange. (A bank's lobby would do and you could tell him you are going to put it into your deposit box.)

I have a pretty good relationship with a local coin store. Would it beworth asking him to help mewith the deal?

He could be a help in telling if it were fake of not. He could also maybe provide you some security in not being hit over the head and your money taken. But if the coins are hot then you will still be on the hook if the police come looking for them.

Just my two cents about craigslist. Very recently a local man made a deal for some silver bullion via craigslist. When he arrived to pay he was held up at gunpoint and robbed of his cash. Made quite a stir in the local papers. Although I know of good deals found on craigslist, I would always proceed with caution and use the advise given i.e. met in a bank lobby. Even then I would still be leary. IMO craigslists doesn't have the best of reputations and therefore could attract indiviuals of similiar reputations,, but to each their own. best of luck.

Seriously people, there are no less than 10,000 SUCCESSFUL and NOT-ROBBED-AT-GUNPOINT trades on Craigslist every single day.

Meeting in a public place is simple and solves any risk of assault.

I've done a few Craigslist trades, very easily.

Unless you are meeting in some unknown place don't fear anything other than fakes :)

It's amazing how 1 bad apple can effect so many minds negatively. That's why we have cars that only turn and don't move sideways. That's also why the "rebreather" style scuba suit took an extra 25 years to come out. ONE bad incident.

Please people, look at the stats and you will see the safety of shopping on Craigslist is probably statistically better than driving a car.

I have done a few CL purchases. I have meet most of them at a public place. I did go to a girls house once to buy $80 with of coins. I told her that she was brave/ crazy to let someone come to her house. I wasn't concerned because who would lure someone to their house with $80 worth of coins?

You don't have to be the BEST you just have to be.......SLICK

Actually, you were taking the bigger risk. She could of had Bubba waiting behind the door with a baseball bat. Or robbed you at gun point. $80 is a lot of money to a crack addict. She knew you had at least that much on you. Did you verify it was actually her place, and not a bank owned home, or someone who was on vacation?

Or, she could accuse you of attempted rape. All that is needed is the accusation to make one's life utterly miserable. Facts be damned. Never go into a home or building with strange woman unless you have at least one female witness with you.

I too have done quite a few deals through Craig's list. Except for the few that stood me up, all have went well. I always met at a public place.
