Red book also says a few 1974 D and 1977 D Ike dollars were made in 40% silver in error.
(Yeah, I know, where did I pick up a Red Book that says things aloud? ) |

The Ike dollars that came uncirculated were 40% silver. They were called "blue ikes" and "brown Ikes". The blue Ikes came in sealed plastic with a blue plastic "token" beside them. They also came in a blue envelope holder. The brown Ikes came in a wooden display box, which is why they called them brown because of the wood. They are the ones that are silver. The average circulated Ike dollars are cupronickel as pencilvanian stated. |

EZ Money, You got them mixed up.
The Blue with a token have 40% silver.
The Brown were copper nickel.
Most IKEs are copper nickel, but there are a few silver ones. Just enough to confuse people.
Please see the next post. I stand corrected, Thank you. |
Silver Monometalism is the most permanent and stable form of money the world has seen. Natural law and history prove silver value is best multiplied by gold and best divided by copper. It is only in this counterfeit currency time when the natural law appears suspended. |

Actually I think EZ Money is correct. Both the Blue Ikes and the Brown Ikes are silver. Full details here.

as far as i am aware, most of the ikes you will find are clad, but a few nifc and errors are silver. i would edge and sound check them, and then weigh any contenders to confirm. i think any s-mint are silver, but as noted above there were some accidental D-silver. |

Actually the only for sure silver S mints are 1971 and 1972. 1973-1976 had both Copper-Nickel clad and Silver Clad that were minted in San Fransico. and from 1977 to 1978 there were no silver S minted ikes. the easiest way is to edge check them like TXTim said |

I think you could buy them cheaper on this forum than on eBay if you wanted a bunch. |

There is a guy on ebay about 2 Christmas seasons ago that sold Ike dollars for $1 and free shipping; I think he was trying to generate more business and people looking at his store.
I jumped on it and got my Ike for $1 free shipping.
One time I got a Susan B Anthony for below a $1 free shipping.
I don't think I would pay over $1 face for them unless they were silver. |

Psst - buy Peace dollars instead.
Ikes will never be worth more than $1.10. Silver ones excepted.

The S mint mark is the give away. Each of the silver Ikes contains .3161 oz silver. Not enough to make you rich, but if you can buy them right, not a bad coin to have. |
Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply. |
