I screwed up on my deposit slip today. There was not a calculator right in front of me. I turned in a $25 box of pennies + $28 nickels + $9.50 pennies. I added wrong and wrote down $52.50 on the deposit slip. The teller did not catch it. As I was driving away, I thought about it and realized I had made a mistake. When I went back in to the bank, the teller at 1st said my calculation was correct but then I added it right in front of her on my cell phone and showed her I was off by $10. She said there was nothing she could do about it until the end of the day when she balances the coin for the vault.

She said she will call me if she needs to credit my account and said she would not call me if she is not off.

Guess I just got screwed out of $10 possibly.

I doubt you will be screwed out of the money. She will be off by $10 at the end of the day and they will know that it belongs to you.

Well, I hope you are right. But if I had not went back into the branch, she would have never realized it was me that was short on my deposit. Leason learned to be more careful.

I agree with highroller. You'll get your money.

In any money handling occupation, being over on your drawer is as bad as being under. They will correct it. I wouldn't worry about it.

But should'nt she have double checked my math as she was making the deposit? I'm just thankful I realized it after I left.

Yes, she should have added it up her self! Bank tellers are getting more and more lazy now adays. I deposited a larger amount of cash into the bank last week and the teller filled out all the slips and entereted it into my account before she even bothered counting how much was there.

I always, always, always ask the to add it.

If you had a deposit slip that you were writing on, that means you had something to write down the amounts with and add them on paper.

Remember, its your money, so take care of it.

You don't have to be the BEST you just have to be.......SLICK

I ususlly don't write the amount down. I know what it is, but make them count it and when they say "such and such" amount, I verify that that is what I had or that is is different.

That is probably a good idea; usually I just take cash and don't fill out a slip so that forces them to count it; however, today I decided to deposit it into my account.

It only took once for me to not do the math. I add it up, but I only use my total to confirm thier total.

My bank charges a fee if you get your math wrong, but not if you don't add it up.

Hope you get your $10 back. I once lost $200 to the bank because they marked my zincolns as penny bags and somehow the $60+ bags all became exactly $50.00 after being weighed. I launched a formal investigation after explaining to several people how/why it was incorrect due to zincoln weight vs ave circulation weight. Somehow the exact $50.00 on 20 bags was not peculiar to them either. Of course the bank said that the coin company measured those bags perfectly and that there were no signs of any errors. LOL! I asked if the coin company just happened to notice that their sorting landed an extra 20,000 chips that they just could not account for somehow....

The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities.

Just to add to my last comment- That was the last time I sent coins off with an "undetermined amount". They force the proof upon you otherwise everything is normal on their end. That was a rookie schoolboy error on my part. Since that time I made sure to get my $200 of coin dumping services, dropping off multi-cart weekly dumps in exess of 100k chips/visit. Karma

Well no surprise, she did not call me back. Looks like I'll have to call the 1800 # tomorrow and fight for the $10.

Sorry to hear of your problem. I hope you get your money back.

A very similar thing happened to my wife and I recently. We are 'small' penny hoarders, getting a few rolls from different banks once in awhile.

Recently we went to our 'dump' bank which has a free coin sorter in the lobby. My wife to the slip total to the teller. Since we have an account at this bank, we don't have to pay anything to sort coins.

When we got to the car, my wife checked her bank slip total and counted her money. She was $10.00 short. She went back to the teller and was immediately given he $10.00 without any questtions asked and with apologies for the mistake.

Guess a lot depends on what bank and where ... maybe having an account there helps too.

Best wishes on getting your 10.00 back. That'll buy 1,000 pennies to sort.

Ok it ended well. The teller did not follow through like she was suppose to. However, I called the 1-800 # and the phone teller credited my account for the $10.

Well not to offend anyone in the banking profession but the level of professionalism for tellers seems to be lacking at many bank branches I go to.
