3 boxes of nickels searched. Got skunked on silver. If silver keeps on rising,a silver nickel will be worth $1.00 soon.
12 1940's 62 1950's 1 pure canadian nickel |

Finding those war nickels is common. The main reason is few collectors like the Jefferson Nickel so there are still many laying around. You can get them from banks in boxes or even bags and there is usually some war nickels there. Many, many individuals that collect coins just don't like the Jefferson Nickel so there are lots of all dates still avilable. Oddly enough some of them in the 1950 area are way more valuable than the war time ones.

You find a heck of a bigger percentage of them detecting too, regular nickels read close to pull tabs (as does gold unfortunately) but the silver component ones ring up right nice, I've gotten about 20-30 of them over the past year or so... |

| War nickels were minted from 1942 through 1945, but regular nickels have about $.067 worth of metal in them. Read all about it here: You must be logged in to see this link. |

| For the roll searchers you must remember when you aquire a box of rolls or just a pile of rolls, you are just getting what people have returned to banks. Usually many banks either have rollers or send to a place to be rolled. You are looking through coins that usually have been looked through many, many times. Of course there are the few there from a home robbery, someone just duping a jar of old coins. But usually your wasting many hours for a chance that someone missed something. If you go to banks and ask for a bag of cents, nickels, etc., you may acqure something that has sat in a vault for a long, long time. Many banks keep a few bags of assorted coins for emergency low coinage times. If your lucky enough to get a few of them you may actually come up with a bag of coins that has sat for a long, long time. |

It depends on condition, how much you paid, and what they charged for shipping. It is hard to find the silver ones in rolls.. but it does happen. You should be able to find the other 2 you need in rolls if you go through enough rolls. I will even give you an incentive.. if you can find both the 1950 and the 1967 nickel by the end of the year in circulation I will send you the first year of issue 1938 nickel to complete your collection as a reward. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

That would be a smart move to stick to PENNIES. I highlighted that word to emphasis it since there are a lot of nuts that insist they are CENTS, not PENNIES. Regardless, although a completed set of Jefferson Nickels appears nice looking in an album, they seldom are really worth anything substntial. By that I mean you may see in something like the Red Book that some are worth a cetain amount, it is really difficult to sell any Jefferson Nickels. Possibly on ebay, but not a biggy in coin stores or coin shows. I've seen completed sets in all MS grades for a few hundred dollars and just couldn't find a buyer. Halves are decent for resale and so are some Dimes. Your best bet is PENNIES of course. They continue to climb in value for almost every date. Some of the rarer ones are becoming outlandish in prices. And it is always easy to resell the famous Lincoln Cent. |

If my bank does have bags of coins would I just be able to find out from the teller? Or would I have to call ahead?

| Sometimes the regular tellers don't know what is in the vault. It is usually best to ask the merchant teller when they are not busy. |

I try to get in good with the vault tellers. They tend to have access to the vault. I place orders, but it never hurts to just stop and ask at random banks.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms.
