Ok, before the board goes crazy and I get a hundred responses telling me it's illegal. This is my thought, If someone could or has amassed enough canadian pennies (not illegal to melt in US) someone could be able to start a thread with the process needed to take and make copper bars so that when the melt ban is lifted then we could have a head start. If anyone has any thoughts on the matter or knows a link that could provide some answers please feel free to share the knowledge.

| It's not illegal to melt my American copper pennies. I get lots of really meltable ones just across the border. It's all about location guys. |

| i beleive i read on market harmony's website that he will melt your bullion for you into bars, thinking he is not melting pennies but am guessing the practice of melting is all the same, so i would say he has it all figured out already. perhaps he will chime in.... |

IF the melt ban was removed, I would offer a service to hoarders to have their pennies melted down if that's what they wanted. But, I would suppose that the scrap yards would pay you #2 scrap copper prices if you could prove that your hoard is 100% copper pennies.
If you wanted to do the melting yourself, then it is possible. You need a high temperature furnace/kiln, crucibles, molds, safety equipment, and YOU'VE GOT TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. It's not child's play, but it is fun to pour molten metal into molds.
If you do cast your own bars, then they will not be pure. It is difficult to remove zinc from 95/5 brass alloy. So, in the end, you just end up with a big chunk of 95% copper. Casting pretty things out of them will add value, however.
Melting point of copper: 1984 F Casting temp: 2100-2150 Electric furnace: several thousand $$$ Gas furnace: build your own for low cost and much hassle, or pay about $600 to $1300 (but deal with other issues not associated with electric furnaces) Consumables: time, utilities, crucibles, flux, molds, safety gear
After all of that, you still have to do something with your finished product. |

| Michael (Market Harmony) makes great products. When it comes time to melt down and cast anything, I am sending it to Michael, period. The last thing I need to do is harm myself over making a bar. I will leave such tasks to the experts. |
Just my two cents! |

I don't even like to try to melt butter, much less metal.
Not only does MH make nice stuff, he is a pleasure to do business with.

Well MH you have a new customer then it sounds like you got the corner on this market. I would love to see some of your molds perhaps you can start a thread. I also have around 2000+ pounds of scrap copper wire (benefits of working on water wells) I am guessing that is what you like to melt.

IMHO I would think that in the end the pennies provide an already "assayed" product that is recognizable. After melt, you have to prove what you have... would think that the amount of labor involved in melting would be better served propecting for more copper.

Happy Prospecting! |
