Well, it has been quite a while since I have found a silver coin in a roll of pennies but it happened again tonight. The coin was a first for me, and I think a first for anyone in the forum. It is a Mexico 20 centavos from 1928. Not a lot of silver, but definately silver!

Nice. Silver is silver. Especially when it costs you only 1¢....

Yes, it was from a CRW. And I did sort more.. that is why this the 5th silver coin I have found in penny rolls so far. 1 merc, 2 roosies, 1 really really old six pence and 1 20 centavos. |

I haven't found silver in my pennies yet. Some steel and other denominations in the bags, but no silver.
An awesome find though. I enjoy finding coins mixed in with the pennies that don't belong. |

That is excellent!
It is hard enough finding silver in expected places like nickel, dime, quarter and halves CRWs.
I only found silver once in a penny CRW. I think hold the record for the oldest siver coin found in a penny CRW. I found a heavily blackened 1910 Canadian dime. |

I assumed it would be CWR, as in customer wrapped roll. That's what threw me off. Thanks! Aaron |

I have hundreds of extras of these! I should see if an automatic counter would give me fifty cents each for them!!! By the way, it's not a total loss, at least they have about 6 cents worth of copper in them. Oops, the clad halves have more - nearly 7 cents worth.

I am curious what the record is for the oldest silver in any penny roll. I found an 1843 8 Rigsbank Shilling from Schleswig Holstein in a NF Strings roll. |
Just my two cents! |

I think you have the record for the oldest silver found in a penny roll two cents. My oldest was the 6 pence.. 1917.
Sorry about typing CRW.. my coins must have been rolled backwards.
It's easy to get zincolns in half rolls Country.. heck, I get them in dime rolls all the time.. somehow they manage to squeeze them in there. At least the British coppers were a little better.. but you kind of took a beating.. such is the fate of the half hunter. |

I have quite a few of those old english coppers too. I even have some english hammered silver.. but I didn't find that in a roll. |

Cool. At least it was pre-1920, which makes it sterling. All the stuff 1920-1947 was .500 fine silver.
As for the other English stuff, I'd be interested in hearing more. I'm sending you a PM. |

That is what this forum is all about Aaron.. sharing of information, experiences and ideas. You know a lot more about british coins than most of us and I learned a little bit from your post above.
N.F. String & Son is a manufacturer of coin rolls. They make the 1000 foot rolls of paper used by automatic coining equipment. They also make what we call shotgun cartridge rolls (precrimped on one end), but generally when someone refers to an N.F. String & Son roll they are talking about a bank wrapped (crimped on both ends) roll of pennies in the white and red paper with N.F. String & Son name on it. Sometimes these are called "Fed" rolls, though I think coin rolling is done by coin processors rather than the Fed. This type of paper is generally the one many collectors/investors prefer for some reason. If you list a BU roll of coins on eBay you will generally get the question "Are they N.F. String & Son rolls?" Their paper is no better quality than many other manufacturers' paper, but many folks prefer it. Anyone can buy the paper from them and "roll their own" but most folks think coins in that paper are wrapped by a bank or the Fed. I have all denominations of their paper.. cent through half dollar, for use with my machines. I don't roll small dollars, so I don't have that denomination paper. |
