Hello again, I've been looking for a portable water filter with a long filter element life for camping survival etc. any ideas? I would rather have a filter that doesnt have to be replaced, does such an animal exist?

Could activated charcoal work in a camping situation? I've yet to try water purification in an outdoors setting, but it might be possible to rig some kind of filtering system using activated charcoal.

At the risk of sounding obvious, did you Google it?

Hey nickelless, yes I searched and have talked to some people about it but was just curious if anyone had some first-hand experience with one like I mentioned. The ones I checked out looked good and seemed to be sturdy but you never know...
I think activated charcoal would work, and if things go south for an extended period of time I believe a person could set up a large system but in the first few days, weeks etc. I would want a reliable filter I could take anywhere and drink pond water if I had to.

I've read about people using charcoal from a wood fire to purify water, but I don't personally know anyone that's done it. If it works, that might be handy to know.

Are you throwing that out?

Used a ceramic + charcoal MSR waterworks for years when out camping and fishing. Always found it to work perfectly. Water came out colorless and odorless- even when filtering from muddy murky water.

The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities.

Got any links on that, Jon?

Nickelless-

For the MSR product (note you can screw a water bottle onto the output side of the filter)-

Have also found great success using Katadyn products-

I'm sure there are other good brands out there. These two mentioned above are designed to deliver in demanding conditions with consistent reliable output.

to state the obvious, tablets work well. i have used pine charcoale and a undyed sock. theoetically, a brita system would work.
a ranger once told me a gas mask filter works. also coffee grounds and sulfar. good luck.

Chaos and discontent is coming...but who will be the cause of it?
