Hey everyone. Kinda new here. I was asked if I was the one who had my daughter sorting coins with me. I have a picture of her working with her little blue Whitman folder that I took yesterday, but I can't seem to figure out how to upload a photo into a post yet.

ANYWAY, my question is who has their kids involved in any sort of collecting or sorting with them?

My Ruthie just turned 6 and asks me multiple times a day if I will help her put her pennies in her books. She has a 3-book set that she is trying to fill completely. Heck, I haven't even done that yet! I still lack probably 10 to complete the entire 1909-2009 run. I am having to reopen some of my copper rolls to find some of the early mems.

Well, who has kids doing the numismatic thing? Or separating coppers? Let's hear your stories!

Aaron

For a while my kids saw sorting packaging or other coin related actions as fun. Now they find any excuse to be someplace else.

Awake, O kings of the earth! Come ye, O, come ye, with your gold and your silver, to the help of my people, to the house of the daughters of Zion, to the help of the people of the God of this Land even Jesus Christ.

I do not have KIDS that help me but I do have one GRANDDAUGHTER (age 9) that loves to sort pennies when she comes for a visit. Her favorite is the wheats. She saves all the pennies she and her mother gets in changes and checks for coppers. Then my 2-1/2 year old GRANDSON loves to "MAKE MONEY, GAMAW". I have a Ryedale and he loves to empty the rolls and put them in the Ryedale. I open the top and bottom and he dumps the rolls in a little cup, turns on the Ryedale, dumps the pennies in amd when done turns it off. He sings a little song - MAKIN MONEY HONEYYYYY, MAKIN MONEY HONEYYYY. Now sure where it came from but his Daddy tells him he has to go make some money when he leave for work.

Nice stories, and cute kid. I don't have any children.

My 5 year old daughter enjoys looking for the wheats and canadians when I am sorting. She also looks through the "junk" foreign coin bins at the coin shops.

She has also confiscated all of the state quarters she can find in the house.

My kids aren't interested yet. I've set some coins aside for them when they get the bug. They'll come around just like I did.

Now I have a second little helper. This is Sarah, and she's 4. She likes to stack the coins for me.
Since Ruthie collects Lincolns, I have decided to save Canadians for Sarah. She thinks that's cool, and can't wait to "learn her numbers better" so she can start collecting for real!

My Son never got past even starting to get interested in coins. I constantly gave him some and they just sat there. Most kids today are way to much into computers and computer type games. And now with Facebook, utube, myspace, etc. who needs or wants those silly metal things. Now he is married and he too has kids and they too have no interest since neither him nor his wife have any interest in coins. I suppose all mine will end up in a banks counting machine.
From the photos it appears those kids are using folders for the coins. This is not a great idea. For one thing, they do not see the reverse of the coins that way. Next they develope the bad habit of pressing coins in with their thumbs, also not to good for coins. Next the rear of the slots are usually full of glue from the manufacturing process and will efect the coins eventually. And if the coins are well worn, they tend to fall out and kids will learn to spit on the coins to make the glue stick so the coins will not fall out and this too is not good for coins.
Spend a few dollars and get them Albums.

I know there is typically not a lot of value in foreign coins. However, I would recommend considering getting a child a world coin book and a ton of cheap foreign coins. My mom did this for me when I was growing up and I learned a lot about foreign countries that way.

Great photos :) My girl is a little younger but she still likes coins a lot - to bang together, throw and lick, but hey it is a start.

The Whitman books are just a starter. If she shows real lasting interest, we will upgrade. And as of right now she doesn't have any high value coins. If she did, I would introduce her to the 2x2.

Oh, and we always wash our hands before "coining" plus we use a napkin to press the coins in! Little kid fingers are never really clean, right?

My boy is soon to be 13. He's been going with me to coin shows for a few years and just recently helped his old (crazy) father sort coins. I think he only does it cause he knows I do it and likes to hang out with me - for now! And he gets rewarded with some cool coins as well for his efforts. Best coin I bought him was 2 years ago I gave him a 1/4 oz Gold American Eagle for his Golden Birthday. I thought it was expensive then but I did it anyway. That was when Gold was about $800/oz. I should have bought 2 not just 1!!

BTW, great pics of the kids! Love to see that. No offense, but most of us are older folk - nice to see some pictures of young people on here! Makes me feel better about the hobby.

Most recent book I've read: "Meltdown" by Thomas E. Woods Jr. Current book: "I.O.U.: Why Everyone Owes Everyone & No One Can Pay" by John Lanchester

I had no idea that anyone living today knew what a Golden Birthday was! Mine was special, I didn't get gold, but it was Sweet Sixteen!

This is great reading about all of the parents involving their children in the great coin hobby.

Enjoy.

Boy, if I only had some kids!!! Imagine the sorting I could do. Great to see the smiling faces of everyone else's kids enjoying the hobby. My dad got me started with a Whitman thumbbuster penny by year book when I was six.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I just melt every time my 2 1/2 year old runs to me with a coin, any coin and says "look daddy a penny!"
She knows if its a quarter or dime but she always says penny,I guess she knows I like pennies best.
She came upstairs tonite and showed me a quarter she found, saying "look daddy a penny".She was very happy, but not as happy as I am of her. They say you can't take it with you,but you can leave an impression,"and a hoard" and hopefully some wisdom for what to do with it.My 11 year old found the first 2 indians and while she is more into girl things now I know she remembers the thrill she had, waiting for me to get home, yelling to me off the porch "guess what I found, guess what I found".And she has more money saved then I do in the one bank,we both opened accounts in the same bank they have counters at.I'll have to post a photo of my little "sorters" soon.

Working on getting my 3 year old into coins. He loves putting my already sorted ones into the piggy bank. I went ahead and bought the Ryedale Ace just to get him interested in sorting. I think he is really going to enjoy it. He always looks at my stack of halves, nickels, and pennies and says, "Thats daddy's money" Love it, makes my heart melt.

Imagine if those kids are interested in money now, how much they'll be worth by the time they are our ages. Imagine going to your daughter and asking for a loan.

I have three boys to get interested.
My oldest is interested in helping, but his interest wains after 15 min or so.

Actually, he is learning to read and can count to 100 now. I want to test and see if he can pick out the pre-82s with any degree of accuracy.
