Someone local is selling what looks to be an 1826 half dollar in VF-EF condition, but I want to determine if it is real. What does 90% silver 10% copper sound like in a ring test? I guess I can also weigh it, and make sure it has the writing on the edge. Any other suggestions?

I guess they could still fake it and make it 90% silver because the potential numismatic value is so far above the price of silver.... oh well.

Wow that is a nice coin.

The specs for a 1826 Bust 1/2 are as follows.

13.48 gr
32.5 mm diameter (approximately these do vary slightly)
There is lettering on the edge. I'm not sure if this one will say "fifty cents" or "half of dollar"

The edge of these half dollars shows the following:

FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR

From my Red Book, the picture you posted is the "First Style(1807-1808)".

The "Remodeled Portrait and Eagle(1809-1836)", on the reverse, there's a branch extending to part of the eagle's wing.

Kind of confusing, maybe someone can clear this up for me.
