Not to discourage anyone (Sheba, AGgressiveMetal) but I think this guy makes some good points. Everyone needs to be careful not to overpay for fabricated copper bullion items that are selling by the ounces when the price we follow is based on the pound. Is there even a resale market for those items? That said, I do think anyone who is simply accumulating pennies, regardless of the size of the hoard, will profit someday from their efforts.

That thread has been around for awhile. That is not the original site where it was discussed. Notice they have a category to try to sell you copper (and gold and silver) bullion at the top? If you click on those links to eBay and buy something, they get a kickback. They copied and pasted that discussion to their page to try to get more Google hits when people search for "copper bullion." There is nothing else useful or helpful on the site...just an attempt to make some money as they pass you through to eBay.
The person bashing copper bullion (Dan) has a blog doing computer hardware reviews, and the domain is registered to a computer service company in Maine, so it seems likely that he owns the site. Seems odd to me that he would bash copper bullion so much, to the point of referring to it as "HOW TO SPOT AN UNEDUCATED IDIOT," but then have this at the top of the page: quote:
Whether you are a collector or and investor in search of Gold, Silver, Platinum, or Copper Bullion. You've come to the right place. We have the best prices you'll find anywhere.
He's not actually selling anything of course...he just conveniently points you to eBay to buy the stuff and collects his commission. Calling people "idiots" for buying the product you are trying to sell seems like a pretty bad sales tactic to me.
Anyway....
This is a debate that comes up quite often. There are numerous threads here and elsewhere discussing it. Not here, but on another forum, some of the people calling copper bullion a scam, because you pay more for it than the metal value, turned out to have no problem dropping $500 on a slabbed silver coin. Seems hypocritical to me.
If your exit strategy is to load all your copper up and take it to the scrap yard, then obviously fabricated bullion bars are not a good choice. But is your exit strategy for a safe full of SAE's and gold Krugerrands to sell them to a refinery as scrap? Resell bullion bars to other copper bugs, on eBay, or to a dealer. Most storefront dealers don't want to touch copper now, but I am confident that you will see copper become more commonplace in the years to come. I know of at least two major online precious metal dealers that are already handling copper cents, and I and others are working towards expanding that number and the product base.
I would argue that in today's market you can sell a copper bullion bar on eBay much easier than you can sell a flat rate box full of copper cents. Try it sometime . But both have pros and cons, and both have a place in a sound copper portfolio. |

Nate - I haven't been posting on this site for long, so didn't realize this has been an old rehashed argument. I agree that both bullion bars and pennies will provide diversification within a copper portfolio and it's probably much easier to transport larger bullion than pennies. Plus, your bullion products are so pretty. I do think it's hypocritical for that site to both sell and bash, so I have removed his link from my site. |

Thanks Beauanderos for the link. I read it felt like I added some helpful things to think about regarding copper.
But, Wow! That dialog between 'Mr. Dan' and 'Ms Mary' makes me really appreciate the decency and politness used on this forum, even when foks disagree with each other. So, thanks to all, specially the 'big guys', for keeping this a really nice, clean, helpful and insightful forum!
For now, I am just 'buying' copper pennies at the 'going rate' of .01 per penny . I think, someday, if 'metals' prices for gold, silver, copper, etc. keep working their way 'up', probably it will be fairly easy to sell or trade a quantity of pennies and make a little 'profit' in the process. No matter what happens though, I'm having fun and even my wonderful wife is enjoying this 'hobby'.
Thanks again.

And gorgeous copper bars, they are!!! Beautiful works of art!
People aren't criticized for buying other forms of artwork. Why should they be for buying beautiful bullion bars that are made from copper?
Enjoy. |
