I found a 1908 V nickel tonight sorting nickels from the bank.
I was kind of excited

Yeah sorry my camera isnt the best.
And to think 2 weeks ago, I was fighting the idea of sorting nickels. I am definitely on board now :-) 2 World War II silver nickels, 2 buffalo nickels, and now my V nickel in 2 weeks. |

| I found a 1883 no cent V in my first box of nickels I ever searched. That was in August, since then I have been hooked. I dont track my number of boxes but I have found 24 war nickels and 5 buffalo's and a very corroded 18XX V. I dont really consider the second V a major find, but nice to see they are still in circulation. |

| There is an interesting thread about searching nickels over on the coin community website. Check out the guy who is searching 25k rolls. There are also some other interesting post there that show the "odds" of getting V's, buffalo's ect. I post my finds to that one when I get the time. |

Nice score.  I have found 5 of them. Horgad was finding a bunch of them a while back (I think it was him...).

If your camera has a Macro mode, turn it on and your camera can focus on objects up close.

Yea sorry, thats the site. If you look into the modern US coins thread there are several posts there about nickels. One of the posters keeps stats, here is his latest post.
Overall find rate is 1.268% ...... so the 'average' $100 box contains 25.36 finds.
Find Rate for War Silver is 1/3,438 coins (found 32)
Find Rate for Liberty V is 1/110,000 coins(found 1)
Find Rate for Buffalo is 1/10,000 coins (found 11)
Find Rate for 'Key' Jefferson is 1/7,857 coins (found 14)

| It is just being at the right place at the right time PreservingThePast. Statistically there are several members that should have found an Indian cent by now, but have not. You are the only member that has found a 2009 nickel in circulation. Now if you were to happen to get some boxes of Dunbar nickels at your bank, statistically your odds are much better than most of us for getting solid rolls or boxes of the new nickels. If you were to get them, I would be happy to help you profit from them.. you wouldn't even have to sort. |
