Looking for suggestions: What's the best way to buy small amounts of gold (1 to 10 grams) at a decent price compared to spot? Thanks!

That's not a dollar, mate...THIS is a dollar.

Local dealer. No shipping or tax, at least around here.... Sometimes a good online deal can be found as well.

Try frequenting the local coin shows. I have snagged a few 1 and 5 gram bars for slightly higher than spot. You can also advertise on Craigslist under "wanted". There's not alot out there but if you're persistent you do get lucky. Also as Deal said, check with your local coin shops...that's probably your best bet, although premiuns seem to be running a little high right now.

I would try local coin shops. Online dealers seem to want quite a premium for 1-10gram bars. I would suggest that you get 1/10 or 1/2 oz rounds/bars though because not everyone knows that there is 31.1 grams in a troy ounce.

I have used Northwest Territorial Mint before; the benefit is that if you buy bullion in bulk you do not have to pay shipping; I like APMEX but you have to pay shipping which can add quite a bit to the price.

Down side to Northwest is you have to wait several weeks to several months for your shipment. Whereas with a coin store, you can walk out with it in your hands.

Down side to a coin store is they may have limited stock of what you are looking for.

Hi there-

JMO, but 1 gram gold pieces are kind of niche products, and it's likely that you'll pay a hefty premium unless you snipe on ebay or something.
A good way to get a small-ish amount of gold with usually no premiun is to look for us $5 gold commems. on ebay. They are a quarter ounce of gold (+-8 grams), and all but a few sell for usually spot.

Only when they CAN'T have it, ......THEN they'll want it.

I love Cents. If you get an UNC box, you win. If you get a regular circ. box, you win. If you get a zinc box, you don't lose....so you still win.

Stick with 1/10ths or bigger. They are tougher to lose. :)

1/10 are also easier to sell if you need cash.

For sure. My problem is letting go of them....

It's much easier to find deals on silver (bid on ebay from seller's with high positive feedbacks) until your fingers fall off. Doing so sets a floor bid on metals prices, if you make modest bids on alot of stuff, you'll win once in awhile. Build a position in silver (the gold/silver ratio favors silver outperforming gold right now) and when silver moves strongly to the upside, then sell some to APMEX but take the proceeds in gold, not FRN's. Save your money in precious metals, convert as rapidly as you can while avoiding debt, and build your portfolio of REAL money now while it is cheap. If we ever have hyperinflation silver will prove more useful than gold. The premiums on small forms of gold is too high, IMHO.

Hoard now and hold on!

actually the highest shipping can go is only $25, not bad considering that includes insurance. Plus if you order over $25000 shipping is free!
