For me this question is deep rooted in ultimately how bad you think things will get!
If you think the dollar is here to say and you see precious metals as just another investment and way to turn a profit; then you have a different objective than those who hold precious metals and view it as a form of security.
Most of the talking heads on T.V. will tell you this is just another economic cycle and not to believe Chicken Little!
Is the glass half full or half empty? Only you can make that call.... Good Luck!

I do not see the glass as either half full, or half empty.. I see excess capacity. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I view them as both, but more of a security than an investment. |

I will always hold on to my metals. I enjoy the craftsmanship of different bullion, the numismatics of coins(esp. U.S.) and the buying/selling/trading. Very few hobbies offer a return on your purchase and actually makes you save REAL money. If I didn't get into metals a couple years ago, I'd probably be saving up for a new car. Now I'm looking for that widow who hates her husbands hoard of pennies. |

HoardCopperByTheTon, you are one of my favorite characters on this forum. I would like to give you a couple thoughts. 1.No hoard is too big to ship. 2. One of my clients owns 1.75 million pounds of copper, he sold 24,000 pounds of #2 yesterday. He did not start buying until mid-2008. It is his hoard/stash whatever. But basically a shield against inflation/deflation. 2. He used to buy electronics from a variety of sources including military scrap, they would sort it and put the scrap in cardboard Gaylord's, put them in a old aluminum semi box and ship it to Wyoming for smelting/refining. In return he would get silver or gold pellets/bullion on which he paid no taxes on until he sold them for dollars, but he could trade them for other bullion tax free. By the way, they semi box made a one way trip., it was scrap too and got melted down. So, keep on sortin! |

The Dollar in Your Wallet Is Only Worth 18¢ - The Casey Files - by Jeff Clark
Excerpt- ...The local paper once ran a story of a blue-collar worker in the next county over who had stuffed a tidy wad of dollars into the back of his gun cabinet early in his working life. The money was discovered by the family after his death. While saving money is good, the duck-hunter equivalent of Family Mattress Bank & Trust won’t keep your money from depreciating; the stash of $10s and $20s had lost over half their purchasing power since he’d hidden them some 30 years earlier.
About the same time the gun locker was being lined with legal tender, both of my grandfathers – unbeknownst to me at the time – bought some gold and silver coins for me and likewise stored them away. I inherited one set a few years ago and got the others just last month. And the purchasing power of the coins is still the same as it was 30 years ago. ............. I would say that gold and silver are for both investment and security, security towards your buying power.
