Just thought I'd try starting a topic. Just curious if any one else has had a bad experience at a scrap yard or recycling center.
A friend and me did clean outs and junk hauling. We had a pretty good amount of insulated copper 1 and 2 along with about 40 pounds of clean copper 1. We called the closet yard and was offering 1.00 a pound on unclean 1 and .70 on unclean 2. When we pulled up we put the unclean in the load off box and the guy said to put the rest in also. Told him my price quote and his reply was "I never heard of something so stupid". Needless to say I said it loud enough if they want to play games they'll get none of the rest. He looked in the truck and said it was all coper 2 anyway don't know what you're talking about, even the clean. I went to the pay lady got our cash then went to the owners office and had a talk. He was the one who gave me the initial price quote and he wasn't happy how we were treated. It didn't work, took our stuff a little further away and got better prices. This was in '98 and I havn't been back to him since.

It was the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. Loaded a few hundred pounds of aluminum, stainless, copper, brass, and bronze into the van and drove the half hour to the scrap yard only to find that they were closed. Apparently everybody decided to take a 3-day weekend and there was nobody around to handle scrap. The only person there was the owner's son, and he said he would normally send us to another nearby scrap yard, but they also took a 3-day weekend. Turned around and went home (saw several other pickups full of scrap headed the same way). Left the scrap in the van until the next Saturday
All in all, not a bad worst experience |

I can only think of one. About 3 years ago, I took a few aluminum rims and a couple buckets of copper to a place that I normally don't go. I've always been loyal to my yard, but I was in a bind, and at the time they were a little bit higher and I really needed all I could get. They weren't real busy, so I start unloading the truck and setting it about 10 ft. away from the scale. Well, this fat SOB who was working the scales, gets up and proceeds to throw everything back into the parking lot and is yelling how I'm not suposed to bring anything up until I'm called on.
Well, his boss steps out of the office/scalehouse and gets all up in his face and they begin to literally throw punches. I was standing there watching all this take place and decide to get my stuff and go elsewhere. I dont know what set this man off, but I'll never forget not to go back to their yard, and to this day, I recomend others dont do business with them as well. I guess it was kinda funny though looking back now. |

| My bad experience is the same as Nates. Loaded my station wagon full to the top with steel scrap. Even strapped some to the top travel bars. Get to the yard, they are closed for the next 8 days for remodeling. Not taking scrap. Had to go home and unload all the crap back in my garage, just to reload it later. |

My "worst" ws as a buyer, not a seller. I was resposnible for buying scrap for an iron foundry in Iowa and we got all of our #1 and #2 steel from a yard in SE Iowa, who will remain nameless. I was getting a lot of complaints from the furnace operators on the #2 steel. A lot of trash in it; wood, paper and on one occasion a dead dog. I was the tender age of 23 and I was going to the yard to have it out with the owner. He met me and listened to my complaint, he was dressed in rags, terrible clothes. He then proceeded to tell me how he was the poorest man in XX.XXXXXXX and to prove it, turned his pockets inside out.
No more dead dogs at least, after that. |
