For the second time, I have gotten sick when taking time off of sorting pennies. As crazy as it sounds, I am beginning to think there is something to being in contact with the copper and zinc that keeps me from getting sick. For all of the grime and nastiness on pennies, I never get sick when I am going through pennnies on a daily basis. I went out of town for a few days and bingo got sick again. This is the second time that this has happened that I have taken a several days off from sorting pennies and gotten sick in that time period.

I have read a few things that have suggested that copper fights infections. I believe there was an article on Coinflation a few months ago claiming that copper coins could be used in treating bee strings.

I think you are right. The town I am in is going through the swine flu epidemic and they closed school yesterday because over 30% of the kids were out sick. My wife and daughter were each down for two weeks. I keep asking myself why I'm not getting it with everybody in town and my family having it for a month. I am usually playing with copper cents 5-7 days a week. I wonder if the copper is keeping it at bay.

Well I think I'll stop taking vitamins and use the extra money to buy more Lincolns.

Maybe the sickness is just withdrawal symptoms. But I like the idea of sorting copper as a preventive health habit. I am willing to error on the safe side. After all.. a ton of prevention is...

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I think you are all making good guesses. But let's think about this.

Sorting copper pennies = not getting sick
Going out of town = getting sick

The hobby reduces your contact with other vectors (people, outside, etc.). By spending most of your time sorting, you effectively create a barrier between you and the germs that would like to make you sick. Copper may have some other benefits to keeping you healthy, though i would bet it's the former keeping you well.

Selling Copper cents. $0 FV available at 1.4xFV. Also interested in trading for wheat pennies and other coins Please pm me for requests or inquiries.

JobIII has hit the nail on the head. You were not considering all of the variables. It is the going out of town and exposure to viruses outside of your normal exposures that led to your illness. There is no protection to illness by sorting pennies. There is immune enhancement from ingesting zinc, but I doubt you are eating your pennies.

Just my two cents!

Pretty sure if you start sucking down your zinc pennies it will kill you. Not a good zinc disposal plan.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Another possibility. Coins are dirty, handled by many people. By handling all those coins, are you familiarizing your immune system with very low levels of pathogens --- insufficient to make you ill, but enough to give you some immunity.

You bought them out.. and you're extracting all the silver, aren't you?

You wash your hands a bunch when sorting. Guess you don't when not sorting?
