Awesome day today (Sunday). "Ryedale" came to my house today with 2 machines - a Coin Artist and the New Apprentice Model. I currently own a Coin Artist. We had all 3 machines sorting at once.....combined over 1000 coins per minute....or about $600 FV per hour...24 boxes per hour! Also had the Brandt Commercial wrapper running. It was a glorious din in the garage....had to wear ear defenders. Looked like a small commercial operation....for a few hours.
Knocked off about $1400 in total sorting.
Now I'm braggin'....added 200 lbs of Canadian Copper to my hoard today. In the past 7 day the total was about nearly 400 lbs of total Copper. That is a new weekly record for me.
My Ryedale Coin Artist is currently running strong with over 2,160,000 coins processed to date - no mechanical/electronic failures.
Storing hoard in plastic bucket with lids (get them cheap from local donut shop...about 4 gal-ish in size), looks like it will take about need about 14 buckets per ton, stacking 3 high, so footprint is really pretty small. For an even smaller foot-print, looks like 1 ton of US copper would fit in a 55 gal drum. Here is a funny thought - spot price of copper penny works out to $135/gallon...
Hoard Onward!!!

That's not fair! How am I supposed to stay ahead of you if the "factory guy" shows up with 2 spare machines and helps you? You guys must have been in penny heaven.

Isn't that kind of a low % for Canadian pennies. I am doing this in my head but isn't 600 rolls of copper out of 2800 rolls only about 21.4%? I thought Canadian pennies were supposed to run in the 50% range. Heck, you even get 30% on US pennies in your area. Did you lose a bucket or 2 somewhere?

HCBTT:
We were sorting both US and Canadian....the $1400FV was a mixed total. We were seeing about mid 40% on the Canadian Copper and upper 20's% on the US Copper.
3 machines running at the same time was an awesome sight. We were just flying through kitty litter buckets of coins.....processing a full bank box every 2.5 minutes.
So far I've met in person, 3 Haordists from the Forum: Ryedale, Hobit and Canadian Nickel. Pretty neat to met like minded folks.

My hats off to you super hoarders, You are doing a job of pulling in coppers that I can only dream of. It would be a bt tough to run one of Ryedale's machines in an apartment complex (the washer & dryer make enough noise as it is). My limited budget also keeps me from buying too many pennies so I content myslef with pulling in silver and nickels when I can.
Just remember, copper was one of the first metals to be used as money in both the Eastern and Western world, so hoarding copper is paying homage to those of the past who recognized copper and bronze as wealth and hoarded it when they could.
You are following in the footsteps of the wise ancients and you didn't even realize it.
I should have chosen "Cut-n-Paste" as a forum name, since that is what I do, mostly. |

That's one of the things I like most about this forum is the free exchange of ideas amongst like minded hobbyists. I have gotten some great ideas from reading the posts here, and I love reading the stories that guys post about sourcing pennies and when they hit a good copper vein. Most of us that have one of those fancy machines started out as hand sorters. We just realized that our obsession was at such a level that we needed help. Mental health costs being as high as they are made the decision to opt for the mechanical route very easy. The Ryedale machine is a lot more fun than therapy.. and a lot cheaper too. It is quieter than a washing machine and pays for itself in a day or 2 of heavy sorting. Glad I decided to automate. The down side is that a few boxes of pennies don't last very long anymore. For hand sorters, I recommend the purchase of a digital scale. My sorting speed increased significantly when I switched from using a magnifying glass and eyeballing each coin to sorting them by weight with the scale. It is one of the best improvements you can make to your sorting system other than getting a Ryedale machine.

One of my "dream machines" would be to acquire a Brandt coin sorter with the coin recognition option.
I worked for Brandt from 1988 - 1999. (DeLaRue bought them in 1997 or so).
We could actually tune it to offsort wheat pennies! not 100%, but pretty close, due to the patina that develops on older coins.
It is really sweet for offsorting silver halves.
Alas, they are expensive!

MACH® 6 Coin Sorter/Counter
With processing speeds of up to 3,000 coins per minute, the De La Rue MACH 6 is one of the fastest coin sorter/counters available in its class. The MACH 6 is capable of sorting up to eight denominations of coin.
Coin Detection
With the addition of the Enhanced Coin Detection option, utilizing De La Rue's Coin Signature Detection System (CSDST), the MACH 6 becomes the ideal machine to assist in the rejection of foreign or counterfeit coins. ---------------------------------------------
They market it as being able to "reject" undesirable coins like foreign and counterfeit. But you can also program it to sort copper from zinc, silver from clad, etc.
I always envisioned getting one of these and installing it in a van with a generator or DC/AC converter and then driving from bank to bank sorting halves... |

when i read about how the super hoarders are chomping thru thousands of dollars in face value at a time, i get images of those black holes in deep space which get more and more powerful all the time. one day the whole copper penny universe, including us "white dwarves", will be sucked into a ryedale black hole. |
