So yesterday I went to my pick up bank and they had forgotten to order me pennies for the week.

I asked her if she had nickels and said she had $80. I have not sorted nickels yet so decided to take a chance.

I am not really sure if you would consider my sort that successful:

2 canadian nickels --- 1976 and 1987
7 1940's nickels - none silver
15 pre-1970 nickels --- i didnt save the 1964 ones since they seemed to be abundant
I did find one 1959 in very good condition

Not sure if you would consider this a successful or mediocre sort? I'm use to sorting pennies and every time I find a wheat it is instant gratification.

Is that what you save when sorting?

I was going to put the Canadians all together, the pre-1970's together, and the 1940's together.

So would I get a C+ for that sort? haha

That wasn't a great sort - yeah I'd give a C+ haha. I have sorted $400 and have 5 or 6 silver nickels to show for it, in addition to some 30s, 40s, and 50s. And of course Canadians. No buffalos yet, but they are out there.

Save the Canadian Nickels up to 1981 as they are pure Ni. Toss back that Canadian CuNi from 1987 - any US nickel is heaver and contains the same metal. The mint made 1964s for three years in large numbers. A good party trick is to bet people someone has a 1964 in a reasonable sample and you will generally be right.

I gotta be honest, except for that Ni Canadian, that was not a good sort at all. Just get another box, you'll find some good stuff soon enough.

The fact that they got a 1976 Canadian nickel is a good deal. Nickels are fun to sort because you can find buffaloes, war nickels, Canadian and the occasional V nickel. I like too that you buy 5 boxes of them for the cost of a box of halves. Chances are that you will find a war nickel as most people do not check their pocket change for the large mint-mark nickels. I know I did not even care about coins and whether I had a war nickel in my change a few years ago. Now I look at take-a-penny trays and Coinstar return slots almost involuntarily. Finally, a hobby that does not depend on the weather, lol.

If you don't think this hobby is somewhat dependant on weather Jerry.. try toting 24 boxes of pennies out to your car in heavy rain or snow.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
