If i had a credit card and was older I'd buy all of them, BUT i don't have a credit card and i'm still under the jurisdiction of my parents. I can't convince them to let me buy all of the shiny coins so which ones should i go for? The Full proof set, the Lincoln penny proof, the territorial quarters proof, or should i see if i can get the silver proofs? And does anyone think it would be wise to go for the uncirculated rolls of halves?

Thanks

-Mega

Begin buying the coins that you like the best. Ponder whether you want to buy coins close to silver spot, or focus on a theme, or just buy where your heart leads.

+1 Country.
Avoid unc halves as an investment.
Also, think longer term!
You may be controlled for now but that won't last.
All other things being equal, I expect in a few years you can complete your set(s).

I'm kinda leaning toward the lincoln cent and the territorial quarters proof or should i just go for the entire proof set? or are the individual proof sets a better investment or something? I'm just confused by this all, before couple months ago the only place i saw these kinds of coins were on like HSN

i wouldnt necessarily worry about which one will be a better investment. go for the ones you like best and then you will still be happy even if they never appreciate in value.

i'll pbly buy the lincoln set because pennies were what got me started collecting. kind of a nostalgic thing for me i guess.

and i agree with fb101 -- dont bother with the halves

Personally, when I decide what I want to collect, I always buy the most expensive coins first. I do this because with older coins, the more expensive coins seem to appreciate in value faster. However, with more modern coins, it might be best to get the cheaper ones first, and see if prices drop after the initial craziness. A guy in my coin club bought painted quarters from 1999 when they first came out, at $10 a piece. Last month he sold a set of 5 for $12, so just be careful.

Mega,

Start with the coins you like best. Think what it would look like if you had a collection in front of you. Which would be more pleasing: a group of proof Lincolns in 2X2s, a bunch of silver Territorial quarter date sets, or a pile of Mint Proof sets with different dates. Maybe a date collection of coins in a Dansco coin album? I suggest that you buy a RedBook (you can get the prior year's cheap) and search through it page by page to see what seems fascinating to you.

I wouldn't worry about what would be a better investment right now. As time passes, you will discover which coins are the right ones for you.

Ever think of a type set? These are a lot of fun...

You could do a Birthday set, then start to go for a different type set...

Could be by denomination, maybe by century. Maybe over a 20 yr period... You can make it what ever you want.

I know one guy who putting together and is still working on a Birthday type set for all demonination worldwide... Its very interesting...

No, but it can be a very challenging set to put together. I want to do one eventually myself...

My suggestion is to purchase one Proof and one Uncirculated set direct from the US Mint each year. Don't fall into the "Oh, No, the prices of them went down" thing that so many do. If your young enough and start now, in the distant future all of them will be worth much more than you paid for them. AND regardless of the prices or values, it sure is great to see a completed set of each year all in one place. I started doing that in the 50's and really have a great history of them.

The most important part is to enjoy it. Collect what you want. Yes the price will go up and down, just be ready for it.

Also, I suggest you keep away from bulk purchases like rolls of halves or anything else. Today to many do just that and in the future such coins would be almost a waste. Take what happened to the 1931S Lincoln Cent as an example. Back then when the news was out about the low mintage, many people ran out an hoarded rolls of them in Uncirculated conditions and even today after all these years, over 70, that coin is just not worth much due to that.Imagine a cent with only 866,000 minted and even in MS-63 worth about $150.
You too could end up with mountains of coins that you could have made out better purchasing Buggy Whips in case the Horse and Buggy come back.
