Does anyone have any creative ideas on ways to get your sort pennies vs going to a bank?
I had a yardsale last weekend and my friend and I was sitting there sorting pennies when things were a little slower.
A man in his 80's came up to me and asked me if I was looking for wheat pennies and I told him that I was looking for all the pre-1982 pennies.
He then told me that he thought there had to be an easier way for me to get a higher percentage of what I was looking for vs going to the bank and hand sorting pennies.
He said 40 years ago he traveled a lot since he was in the business of buying estates and re-selling the items. He said he would stop by schools and ask for their change. I guess kids would bring in change to buy their lunches??
He said he found some interesting coins because kids would get into their parent's coin collections.
We talked for quite a while. He said he had tons of pennies that have been sitting in jars for years that have been unsearched that he had hoarded 40 years ago.
Of course I thought about asking if he was looking to sell but he started talking about the high premium for unsearched wheats that he knows he could get for them and I didn't even venture to go into asking him how much he would sell them for.
With all of that being said, do any of you have other creative ways that you get your sort pennies? I'm not really sure going to schools would work very well in our modern times.

Okay, here's yet another question from a 'rookie'. What's a 'penny drive' ... or perhaps I should ask instead how a 'penny drive' works?
Thanks!

Penny drives are pretty cool. I really hope I can get involved in one someday.
But from what I understand, Sheba, you can have two types of penny drives. One can be created by yourself, to raise money for a charity, but only in pennies. People donate them to you, you sort out the copper, replace it with zincs or cash, and donate it to the charity. There's also the middleman penny drive, where you offer to buy the pennies from the people that are running it, sort them, count them, and then pay them back or donate directly to the charity. |

Well I usually just go to banks and ask for boxes. I don't recommend anyone going up to school kids and ask them for their change. It was a different era for that guy, and now-a-days the stigmatism surrounding that at risk population is just not worth the potential gains. Banks fundraisers (coindrives) if you have a coin counter. **note, you could also just go find where they will be depositing the coins.
good luck with whatever you do. |

Well I think he meant more asking the school directly for their change vs. going to the kids themselves. However, my mom told me that now a days they discourage kids bringing money to school to pay for lunch so the schools probably don't get a lot of change like they use to. |

Where I did the penny drive was at a church and we raise money for a building project and what was neat was other people where going to many banks to get the pennies and many came from people piggy banks. I got many steels and old wheaties. |

I'd happily look into this, but it really requires a coin counting machine. I don't have one... I've not had any trouble ordering upwards of two grand a week in pennies. No funny lies or anything, just could i please have $X in pennies for next week thanks. period.

Not to be rude, but it sounds kind of wrong to me to sort church money and keep the valuable coins for yourself |
