I found a free coin counting site in my city today and turned in several bags of zincs. While there, a guy shows up with 4 or 5 bags of Kennedy halves. I ask him if he is sorting for silver, and he said yes. According to what he said, he and his father have looked through $680,000 of halves since the beginning of the year. I did not ask percentages of finding silver, of course, but that sounds like a full time job to have looked through 1.36 million coins since the first of the year. he did say they have found a couple of Walkers, and many Benjamins and Kennedys. He said his father had even found a Barber -- I know what a Barber dime is, but I don't know what a Barber half is.
Is it even possible to do that kind of volume by hand?

A Barber half is just like a Barber dime, only bigger. The Barber name refers to Charles Barber IIRC, the chief engraver for the Mint in the 1890s. The precedent in the 19th Century was to keep a common design theme throughout all silver coinage, to apply a consistant design from denomination to denomination. When redesigning the 55-year-old Seated Liberty design in 1892, Barber followed this precedent, creating a common obverse and reverse design that was used for the dime, quarter, and half, varying only by stating the value.

Silver is easy to sort the date is much larger and easy on the eyes, experienced say they can sort a box in about an hour. I've only searched 1 box (next box tomarrow) so took a little longer haha also I was savoring the moment. HH Mark For the record since he's in your area searching that much volume- it would take more than luck for you to find any. |

Unless he had connections to Brinks or something I don't see how he could get his hands on that many different half dollars in such a short period of time. It's not like vending machines take them. In additon, half dollars aren't like pennies. They are rather rare at the banks and are not given out to customers very often at all. If he returned them back there they wouldn't move out again very fast.

I would love to get my hands on a fraction of that amount of halves. I just picked up $100 in halves and only found 3 40%. |

Better luck than I had. I subspect the teller are searching all the halves prior to my getting them.

The guy with the halves was ordering them in bulk. I think a box of halves cost $1000, but I am not sure. I recently found a little more than $700 in halves from two banks. I found 4 40%ers, but that was it. So, I made about $4 in silver. At least I didn't get skunked. |

A box of halves is routinely $500, but $1000 boxes are not unheard of. I've searched over 3300 halves since November, and I've found 8 silver halves this way containing less than 2 ounces of silver. It's a great nurismatic payoff, but a lot of work for little silver.
