It's a lot cheaper just to buy your own basics in bulk quantities and adding spices, fruits, vegetables, sweeteners or any other accoutrements. I buy my own bulk items such as rice at Sam's Club and beans at Walmart (Sam's typically only has pinto and Great Northern beans, in my observation), and shop around between Costco, Sam's and Walmart for other food items in large quantities, except during growing season when I try to buy as much produce as I can from farmers markets and dehydrate fruits and veggies using my 12 Nesco American Harvester dehydrators (be sure to use the Clean-A-Screen tray liners to keep high-sugar foods such as tomatoes from sticking to the tray). I've got 500 pounds of amazing vegetable soup base which can be turned just as easily into a casserole, ground to make a flour mix for bread, turned into a cereal (without the vegetables--I toss in dehydrated fruit or use honey) or turned into just about any other possible dish. I'm about to start working on chicken jerky (I don't like beef that much)--cook whole chickens in a crockpot, then when it's done pull it off the bone, shred it and marinade it overnight, then stick it in the dehydrator. Then when everything is done, I put the jerky or other dehydrated items in 3.5-millimeter 10-by-14-inch mylar bags from SorbentSystems.com and seal it up using the VS280 vacuum sealer: You must be logged in to see this link.
Bottom line, it's a lot cheaper to make your own food for long-term storage. It takes a little time, but you'll get about three times more food for your money. Let me know if you have any questions. |
