I used to go in asking for $20, $30 or whatever in pennies until to my surprise, one day the manager asked if I wouldn't rather have the $50 bag of pennies that they fill up with their automatic sorter and then deliver to brinks when it's full.
Sorry if this has already been covered, I'm new here but didn't see anyone talking about them.
They are so much better than rolls, a lot less work. But do you guys think you get the same quality of coins out of these bags? I seem to be getting a high percentage of coppers out of my latest bag. But not many wheats at all (about 7 so far), BUT, i did find a 1938-S, and a 1953-S. I was excited when i saw the S on those. I just haven't found many of them.
Im' a small time sorter, do it all by hand because it relaxes me and gives me something to do while the wife watches reality garbage on tv.
Any thoughts on the $50 bags?

Hi there-
So, you sort for therapy too, eh? Me too. I do it for the calming effect as much as for the copper.
Maybe we should get together and write a book about the holistic properties of sorting. Forget the dog. Get a Ryedale.
Nice to meet you wags |

I love Cents. If you get an UNC box, you win. If you get a regular circ. box, you win. If you get a zinc box, you don't lose....so you still win. |

ha ha, nice to meet you wags.
Yeah, I just can't handle the garbage that passes for television today, but the wife is hooked on it.
I got burnt out on sorting earlier this year, but after a break i'm starting back up. |

Bags are wonderful!.. Ah, if only I could get some.
Though, whacking the rolls can be therapeautic also. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

| So true. After splitting open 2000 rolls from N.F. String. Your hands hurt, your wrists are sore. With bags, a quick slice at the top and you're in business. They also retain their ability to be a good source for storing if you make a clean cut, fold the top and sow it shut with some thread ( may only apply to the heavier plastic & canvas bags, not sure). |

Bags are easy but dirty when it comes to all the excess crap that falls in the penny chute. They are about the same as CWR's when it comes to % of copper and wheat. Nothing special. Be careful where you store them prior to sorting. Keep them inside if possible. Condensation is an issue if you keep them in the garage in a humid climate and that really screws up the way they feed through the Ryedale. |

| Bags are the ideal thing if you are doing alot of sorting. Hand sorting can be rough on the hands and wrists as someone else mentioned. The only potential downside I can see to bags is if someone else is dumping zincs at that branch, but the chances of that are probably pretty low. There still aren't alot of people doing what we're doing so I would say your chances of finding good stuff are pretty strong. Good luck! |

| Do you find bags more at the community banks or the credit unions? I have accounts at both Chase and BofA and they always just have boxes. |

| I like bags. I find that I get slightly higher percentages. However, a major downside for me is the dirt and grime. I absolutely hate it. When you get to the bottom of the bag, it's as if someone dumped lint and dirt and gunk there. Pretty disgusting. |

machine sorted - you dont have to deal with the bent up corroded ass pennies.
hand rolled - you get a lot more crappy pennies, but can get some intersting surprises as well. |

Bags are all I can get - my Credit Union supplies me very well. I just finished a bag 3 days ago and I called my CU this afternoon to inquire about another one. However, I still get some bent and corroded ones, but also some surprises. My dump CU don't mind me dumping - just play it cool and flirt with the lady tellers! |

| I asked one of the managers at Chase yesterday if she could order me bags vs the machine rolled. She told me she could not. She said when they order them into the bank they come as rolls and when they send them out from the bank they put them in bags. |

I have found 1 bank that will sell me their bags, can get 2-3 every week if I want that many. I also have 2 banks that will sell me boxes if they have a surplus (usually do). I'm probably in the minority here, but personally, I like the boxes better. Much cleaner as others have mentioned and faster for me once you find a good method to open the paper rolls (hand sorting, for Ryedales I'm sure the bags are much faster).
Get one of those cheap utility knifes that have the perforated blade that you break off the end to get to a new section. Cut through the top layer of paper and barely scar the bottom layer along the whole length of the roll, sort of like cutting drywall. Give the roll a quick twist in opposite direction with both hands and the paper breaks clean and the whole roll literally rolls into you hand. No further organizing needed, which is a pain when grabbing handfulls with the bags. This works pretty well for the plastic rolls also. |

I want to try bags since some of the members on here have had neat finds such as: a gold ring or a gold coin
I don't think you would find a gold ring in a roll. It makes sense that someone's ring might slip off their hand when they are dealing with a bag. |
