I bought some CA pre 1981 nickels and some of them are VERY rusted. Basically a circle of rust around the rim. Or at least what I believe is rust. (I had no idea nickels could rust!)

Is there any way to get the rust off? Below is a picture for clarity.

I just want to clean these up to the point where I can keep them :) Any help would be greatly appreciated. (As a side the seller told me the condition so it wasn't a surprise bummer or anything.)

I hate to be the bearer of bad news. Those nickels aren't Ni. In 1951 thru '54 they were chromium plated steel. Sometimes called blue nickels because of the bluish hue from the chrome. The change in metal content was to save Ni for the Korean war effort.

Ah, that makes sense Bluegill. I was aware of those and even have the dates listed on my little chart, I just wasn't thinking :)

Surprisingly I'm tons happier now, because I didn't like the thought of potential rust on my nickel hoard :)

Wow that is pretty bad. They are very hard to find in circulation but in that condition obviously no collector value. Spend it I guess.
