Some banks will let you change for cash. Probably not the whole box of quarters. But just be nice about it and try a couple rolls per bank. Might get you somewhere.
Duty free store does exchanges if you live near the boarder. I don't know if they will take a whole box or not. With the currencies being worth about the same you could blend it with canadian quarters and I doubt the bank would even check.
You could always get an American friend to take it in for you next time you are in the US. Know at least one person with a US bank account?

biglouddrunk... Thats how I got these coins in the first place, I know I could just put them back in boxes if I wanted. However, I live by the border, I would like to make a little profit, have a little spending money. a few boxes ago, I got 6 rolls of American quarters, I thought I might as well collect them.

I find a lot of US coins. I just throw them in a jar and roll them up when I get enough.
I used to spend the rolls in the US or just walked into banks in the US - said I'm Canadian - and exchange for bills or 1/2s to check. I actually decided I needed a US bank presence so I opened a free savings account in the US (no problem at all) and just deposit my rolled US coin. I enjoy the exchange rate difference as a little sorting bonus.
If the exchange gets back to par again you can easily deposit US coin at par into any Canadian bank. I've come across whole rolls of US quarters - clearly marked as US$ - in my Canadian buying.

That is a lot of quarters crossing the border. I don't have that many Canadian quarters, but I probably have that many Canadian dimes. I am hoarding them to exchange as we get closer to par again. Since you are so close to the border, you can just shoot across and exchange them here. Coinstar only charges 9% here.. that's like 10% Canadian.. lol. No, you should be able to cash them in at a bank if they are rolled. I would be your American friend and roll them up by machine.. but I live too far south.
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I'm just wondering how to get rid of, say a box of quarters in the states. I can't open a bank account over there and coin star charges almost 10%.
If you want a US account just take your passport and drivers license to a bank in the US - I had no issues opening two accounts.

I remember when I was age 19 & 20 we used to go over to Windsor and drink at the bars. It was nice back then 200 American would buy 300 Canadian. I wish it were that way now you Canadians sorters could make a little money collect the US currency and US sorters like me could buy 98% copper at less than US face.
Of course in a few years here US sorters will be saving up there Canadians because it will probably be worth more than the US dollar.
That would be great to open a US bank account. Next time I'm over there I'll give it a shot. I live in Vancouver B.C., so the border is close... I used to live in Langley, and when I was Coin Roll hunting quarters, I seemed to get a lot of American quarters the closer I was to the border.
I phoned different banks in town and nobody will exchange American coins for American cash. If you think about that, once you break an American dollar bill in Canada, it loses its value... the U.S. coins have the same value as Canadian coins. Seems like a rip off. The reason why they don't exchange coins is because the processing fee's and shipping cost would be too much to make it worth while. HSBC told me they would do it for me only if I had $10K in coins. lol.
I emailed the border cops and asked if there is a limit to how many American coins I can bring back into the states. The response time for the answer to this simple question took 4 months and their response was a one word reply... "Yes". haha! Pricks.

I live near you Coinage. One could make a small living at repatriating US coins if you were focused on quarters, dimes, and while looking for Ni, Nickels.
When my father was in College in the late 60's/early 70's he did private duty nursing. Lots of dead time at night to sort coins. Canadian $ was around $1.10 US so he made good money collecting Canadian coins from curculation in Washington State. He would bring bags of Canadian coins home to Canada, deposit them in Canada and buy US$ to take back to school. There was also the chance to find silver too - but he must have sold off all the silver because he owns none now.

I was averaging about $3-$4 in American quarters per box... with the exchange rate right now, it wouldnt be worth spending yet. I missed out When the rate was at $1.24 (US to CDN). I'll keep collecting and hope America's dollar strength comes up. GO U.S.A. GO!
