This week was my first >$1.5k penny sort. Pick-ups took place Thurs and Friday, and the sorting hasn't finished yet. I've heard a lot of talk about the brinks rolls having less copper than the NF string rolls. I cannot confirm this notion based on my first run, which contained about 50/50 brink & NF String boxes. The ryedale apprentice basically helped me step-up the sorting over 5 fold, but its forced me to stop looking for variety & errors entirely. I still have about 3 or 4 hundred left to go.

Found 3 4 5 IHC's, 2 3 George V's, 1 metal washer, 1 zincoln with a cross cut into it, 1 zincoln missing the copper plate I think. Both the IHC's and the George's all ended up in the zinc side of the Ryedale sort

I'm happy to say i've found a bank with multiple branches that will let me return as many coins to their cummins sorters as I can produce. All I had to do was start an account set-up direct deposit and the bank would be at my disposal. The managers find it amusing that I look for wheats, which is great because lately i was beginning to dread returning over $200 to any one location. One manager even gave me a mercury dime, because it was in the overflow tray and thought it came out of my change. I did space the returns out to multiple days, and to multiple branch locations just to be safe.

Good deal. Keep it up.

yesterday I walked into the local BoA and asked if they had a bag of pennies...the teller replied no but we have boxes, how many do you want? Nice,. I got four almost to heavy to carry out. Will get more today. The first box let loose 26% Cu, 3 canucks and 12 wheats.

My barrel o pennies is getting fuller :-)

Sounds like you got everything lined up great Job. Any chance you can pull the bags out of several of those locations before your dumps are added? You will be able to step up your operation significantly that way. Bagged coin takes much less time to process than cracking all those rolls.

fasteddy.. if any of those boxes you pick up today have white tape on them, you don't want them for your barrel.. just send them to me.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Hoard, just paper tape with the clear plastic tubes so far. But if I get the white taped boxes I will let ya know.

Since I is a noobie to this are the CWR's good or not so good? And why did I find a '62 and a '64 in AU condition...they look almost as good as an '09?

You're bound to find a couple AU or better in a box of 2500 coins. It's really nice when the AU coins you find happen to be from 1940 or older

Hi Hoard,

2 things here:

1.) i don't want to ruin a good thing by dumping and picking up bags. But i'll try it next week.

2.) i dumped an incredible amount at both locations this weekend. When would you suggest i go try picking up bags? I would not want to go before my dumps are picked up but thats about all i know.

Banks are either pick up banks or dump banks. You CAN'T do both. That should be rule #1. If they cut you off from dumping then you could try buying. If a bank won't sell to you then dump there. If you can't dump, try buying.

Also remember the game changes all the time. I have been cut off by a few that won't let me dump or pick up. I just move on to the next bank. Maybe after a year I will try back and see if they will let me get back in the game.

You don't have to be the BEST you just have to be.......SLICK

Al contrar.. you can do both.. but it is delicate.. and should only be attempted by seasoned hoarders. One of my favorite dump banks swaps me out several Brinks boxes for the boxes I bring in. Then they use my rolls for the merchant customers. The next week we do it all over again.

At a bank with multiple branches and lobby machines.. you could select certain branches to do your dumps at and try to buy the bags from the other branches. If some branches will sell you the bags and some will not, you know who's a gonna become a dump branch. Try asking at the other branches of this bank that you did not do dumps at.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I think for the time being i'll just stick to the original plan of dump at one location and pick-up at another. Though you are correct. It can be done. Updated the sorting finds since i'm still actually sorting now.

Hi JobIII - I found a zinc penny today that was missing the copper coating. It was a 1987 D. It might of never had a copper coating by the looks of it. What year & minting was the one that you found? If its the same as mine we might be on to something.

Best regards, Bart

Nice. Yes. Very nice.

I do agree with HCBTT that it can be done, but should only be attempted after you are familiar with the staff. As a general rule, when you 1st get started you need to feel the banks/credit unions out. I have picked up a canvas bag of loose halves at a bank that had about $1200 in it. After I searched it and removed the silver ones, I returned the bag with the new amount wrote on the ticket. The head teller said she wasn't gonna count it, she said she knew that my new total was right and took them back. But I know these ladies very well and my parents were long time clients at this branch.

You have to treat the banks like people, some are your best friends, some are an acquaintance ,while others you would rather just avoid.

You don't have to be the BEST you just have to be.......SLICK

It's really nice to have banks that like you, no matter how odd your request is. One bank this week is no longer ordering for me. Another forgot to place the order, oh well I'll just have to pay some bills this week instead of putting them off.
One of my dump banks has a bag of halves partly filled in a coin machine. I'm going to have to call each week to see if it has filled or not. I want the bags because it's something i've never searched yet.

Ask them if you can buy the partial bag. Some banks will let you. If not, just dump enough halves to fill it, then buy the bag.

Deal,
That's a good idea. I feel like I've been losing out because I stopped searching halves of late. Searching pennies really takes up all my available resources.

Pick up the dime bag also to tide you over. Almost no risk of getting something in the dime bag that is worth less. Easy edge sort.. and sometimes you actually score some silver.

And don't forget the penny bag. Good chance some of the pennies might actually be copper. And sometimes you get some darn dimes in your penny bag. Nothing but upside.

Hoard...What does the white tape on the boxes mean? I've not had any of those yet. Thanks, Ziggy

PS: Just to share a great find...I went to a bank I had not been to in awhile and asked for any halves. They didn't have any so I asked for $3 in cents. They gave me 6 rolls (CWR) and 3 had notes on the rolls of 1942, 1944 & 1945. I asked if they had any more and they said about $100 worth...I said I would take them all. Bottom line is I bought $92 worth (184 CWRs) of which there were 84 rolls of Wheats; 2 rolls of UNC 1980 and the rest had 30% + Cu.

Many of the boxes of 09 cents are sealed with white tape instead of tan tape. If you see white tape it usually signifies commemoratives. I have also seen this on boxes of territorial quarters.

Great story on the cents.. it pays to be alert. Proud of you.. good follow-up.. you got the rest of the wheats. One thing you might consider. Go back to that bank first thing Monday morning and ask for all the CWR of dimes, nickels, quarters, and big dollars. Many times groups of coins like that are all turned in together when someone is closing out an estate. You don't want someone else to get all those Buffalo nickels, Mercury Dimes, SLQ's, and Morgan Dollars, do you? Not great odds, but significanly better than normal. It's about this time of year when the Silver Santa makes an appearance. What's the downside? You might also ask if they have any old paper money.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Hey HCBTT,

What is your age or range if you'd rather not say specifically. No offense, but the message above seems a bit shocking unless you're a teenager.

Job.. lol. I am one of the more seasoned members here. When I first started sorting pennies the copper yield was always 100%.. and wheat cents were plentiful. I cashed in on the Hunt Brothers run-up.. sold out all my silver the day it peaked.. it crashed the next day. I even pulled the silver coins out of circulation when we switched to clad. They were much easier to find then.. almost like pulling copper pennies. Used to go through my mom's change purse to see if there were more men dimes or lady dimes. I have a good relationship with my mom and she understands my obsession. She has picked up coins for me before. I was just joking around a bit with Zig. But I knew he was from AZ and he mentioned going to a coin club meeting in another post. Since there are not many coin clubs in AZ, I thought there might be a good chance he was from Phoenix, where my mom lives. I was just trying to stress to ZigMeister that anytime you score as well as he did, you always ask for everything else.. that's how you convert a double into an inside the park homerun.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
