I went to one of my dump banks today to drop off some zincs and asked if they had any halves. Usually the answer is "no". Today the teller asked the next teller over if she had some and she said "$20.00". I took them figuring another $20.00 of clad.
The rolls looked old so I was hopeful. They were shotgun rolls and looked old and the coins on the ends were shiny. So I am getting excited, peal back the end a little and see "1964" on the coins on the top of each roll.
So now I am really excited. What if the rolls are full of 1964 Kennedy's? Of course they aren't. They never are. I had to wait to get home so my 9 year old could be there to see. It was killing me to wait that long.
I get home and we open them up and....
40 - 1964 Kennedy Halves!!!!!!! Whoo Hooo!!!!
I have never found this many silver halves before. And yes, I did make sure they did not have any more. It looks like these have been in the rolls since they were packaged. Only the coins on the ends were tarnished. The rest are brilliant. A few scratches and a few black marks but otherwise look uncirculated.
I think I'll be visiting this branch a little more often.

that is awesome. but you are the person I hate. when I go looking for halves I always hear one of the following.
I sold them all yesterday
someone came in this morning and bought them.
I sent them all back 2 days ago. nobody ever asks for them.
why can't I be there BEFORE any of the above?

I hear "We had 2 really old looking rolls. They were really shiny. The date said 1964. No Old halves, if that is what you are looking for. We sold them to some guy this morning."
Looks like the Silver Santa came early this year!
Congrats on a great find! Now be sure to check these virgin halves for double dies.
You should probably go back and buy all their CWR Quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies.. just in case. And of course, be sure to ask if they have any "BIG" Dollars. |

| I went back to the same bank yesterday just to check if they really didn't have any more. I am next in line and hear the drive-through teller telling someone that the person who handles the halves is on vacation this week but thought she had $20.00 at some point last week and to try again next week. Looks like I did get the last $20.00 in halves and if I had not gotten them last week I would have joined Hoard in the day late and half dollar short club. Of course, I am usually a member of that club since I rarely find any silver. |
