I came across a good scrap metal recycling you should read, or if you have any friends just getting into scrap recycling as a means of extra income you should have them read it as well. It's very helpful to the new comer You must be logged in to see this link. I found it to be a good read and I am partial owner of a scrap yard. Check it out.

| I was just wondering what any of you might of thought about the article for a completely new scrapper looking how to get consistent amounts of scrap metal? I thought it worked out well for a brand new scrapping buddy I linked it to the other day. He already started off doing very well. This gave him a jump start. |

From the article:
"It also needs to be sorted by types of metal in order for it to be accepted."
I think this is the hardest part for beginners. Heck, it is still hard for me.
In order to maximize what one will receive at their local yard you also need to know how the local yard sorts.
for example, knowing the difference between steel and stainless, and the various grades of the metals can be daunting.

Hahah I love the replies "Clean the metal ahs nothing to do with soap!" that actually made me laugh. Yeah there are a few things that are very daunting at first. I was thinking the article was enough to definitely get a newcomer interested enough to start scrapping, but he'll still need to do some more research.
I agree 100% that the most daunting task is learning how to separate the metals properly. It's really difficult at first to learn how to tell all of the different metals apart. Being on a scrap yard 40+ hours a week has made it rather easy for me. I spend 40+ hours on the yard and then the rest of my time working on my website in my signature below. |

Definitely,
Learn your metals! Nothing is worse then getting to the yard with a huge load of brass expecting a nice payout only to learn it brass coated steel. Take a magnet with you to check these things. Learning your metals is really important in making sure what you think you have is what you have and is needed in sorting the metals ahead of time as well. I think this is something every newbie should be studying up on. You have the internet, do some research. Then do some hands on and you will gain experience.
Call your local yard and stay up to date on there current offerings for different types of metals so you know what NOT to waste your time on and what to be on the look out for.
Get use to how your local yards run as well and how they expect the material to be coming in to get the most possible payout.
Also if you haven't read that article check it out, theres some good tips for where to get consistent scrap.
When I wake up a little more ill come back and post some more in depth tips.

| Ok we'll see how life goes at the yard today, I have to work on the website for about 4 hours today, and on at the yard for 4 hours, plus im leaving for an Electronic Scrap Convention in Florida. So if I get some down time today and can find the yards camera I'll start taking some pictures. If not i'll be on the other side of the country until wednesday. If anyones in Florida, check the convention out I could use a beer drinking buddy. I'll be there promoting the yard and the website. Should be fun... ... ... |

Hopefully i'll be out of here soon and I can get back to the yard and put together a metal guide for the new comers. Anyone out there of faith pray for me to get out of here soon. 15 days is the longest i've ever been in the hospital |

| Thanks man I'm really starting to do better. I have Chrohn's disease which really sucks at my age I'm real young. I had to have a few bowel resections during those 15 days I was there, plus I had a bowel obstruction that had to be fixed. I'm home now, still not back at work and i'm not sure when I will be. For now it's a light diet of easy food, pain pills, and stomach acid pills. I'll be back working before I know it I'm sure. For now I will work on a few of my internet endeavors but I really appreciate the sympathy and praying for me. |

RecycleConnect- I'm glad to hear you are feeling better. My wife has ulcerative colitis at a young age so we sympathize with you. She spent 10 days in the hospital last year.
Anyhow, as far as pics go..I'd like to see definitive shots of what is considered: #1 #1 ins #2 #2 ins etc, etc.
I know this topic has been run into the ground on this forum but I'd still like to see pics with easy to understand descriptions. For example I have a lot of similar looking wire...both insulated, some is clearly copper, the other looks tin-coated copper. Is this #1 ins and #2 ins respectively?
Also, is all stripped wire #1 regardless of gauge? What about pipe or solid items such as a copper bowl?
Thanks and get well soon!
p.s. I've been scrapping for a pretty long time but I've been hoarding it and have yet to hit the recycling center...Therefore I've have no trial and error experience |

I'm in the exact same boat as Dumpster Diver, i too have a lot of scrap i've saved, i strip every wire, and put the stripped copper into a bucket, its almost completely full now. i have not visited a center yet. I find a lot of wires that don't have what looks like copper in it, but a silver metal, i set these aside because i have no idea what it is. The back of my truck is completely full! its full of all the magnetic metal, because i cant separate it any farther than that, I called the scrap yard and asked what i would get for the left over shell and crap from a refrigerator, they said it is all "shred-able" and i would get $0.07 per pound, does this sound right?, its all that's left over from appliances after taking out the aluminum, motors, brass fittings, and copper. If you can come threw with everything Dumpster Diver has asked that would be great! pictures are worth 1000 words, and maybe 1000 bucks as well. :-P
good luck and i hope you get 100% better soon!!! |

0.7 actually isn't bad at all right now. DumpsterDiver I'll gladly get you some pictures when I get back to work which Im still not sure when that will be as of now. I had the bowel resections and i'm still in a lot of pain. They have me on a lot of Morphine right now at home so i'm not even aloud to drive anywhere let alone be anywhere near the scrap yard and heavy equipment until im off the high dose pain medication. I really feel for your wife though Ulceratove Colitis is VERY similar and painful as well. It just stays in the colon region. I'm having a problem right now where they think there is more Chrohn's in a different section on my bowels. There's 15ft that can be reached by Colonoscopy (rectal scope) or Endoscopy (throat scope). So i'll be having to go in for a "New" type of procedure that's hardly used where I swallow a camera inside of a pill and let it record everything until it comes out of my body. I have a bleed somewhere they can't find.
Hope I wasn't to graphic for all of you scrappers but im having a rough time and as soon as I can get back to work and help you all with those pictures I will. Until then its Morphine and sleeping. |
