I'm in kentucky, i took a bucked of stripped copper wire to the scrap yard, they gave me #2 for it, they said that for it to be #1 it has to be thicker than a pencil lead. Is this right? I never read this any where.

Yes, that is correct. Different yards all have their own criteria for grading metals, but I think that one is about universal.

No.1 Copper Wire shall consist of clean, uncoated, unalloyed copper wire, not smaller than 16 gauge (B&S)
Equivalent to ISRI code Berry
