Hi everyone, as the resident foreign coin hoarder I thought I'd give everyone some pointers on what to save from a non-numismatic bullion perspective. Obviously you want to make sure you don't have a rare date, mintmark, or variety before tossing a coin into the bullion stack, but here are some common coins to watch for which I feel are good nickel and copper bullion coins:

The Netherlands: 1968-1999 - 10 cent, 25 Cent, 1 Guilder; pure nickel

Great Britain: 18??-1968 - 1 farthing, half-penny, 1 penny; 97% copper
1971-1991 - 1 penny, 2 pence; 97% copper
1970-present - 5 pence, 10 pence, 20 pence, 50 pence; cupro-nickel (75% Cu, 25% Ni).
1948-1968 - 6 pence, 1 shilling, 2 shillings, half crown, 1 crown; cupro-nickel

Switzerland: 1938-present - 10 rappen, 20 rappen; cupro- nickel
1968-present - 1/2 franc, 1 franc, 2 francs; cupro-nickel

Mexico: 1970-1983 - 1 Peso; cupro-nickel
1964-1983 - 50 Centavos; cupro-nickel
1992-present - 20 centavos, 50 centavos; 92% copper, 6% aluminum, 2% nickel. ("aluminum-bronze")

And he that hath lyberte ought to kepe hit wel / For nothyng is better than lyberte / For lyberte shold not be wel sold for alle the gold and syluer of all the world.

I have been stalking the foreign coin box at a local hobby shop lately. I snagged a bunch of Ni coins for 10¢ each over the weekend.

French ½ ('65 thru '00 - 4.5g), 1 ('60 thru '00 - 6g) and 2 ('79 thru '99 - 7.5g) Frank coins are Ni. I picked up 54 of these.

Netherlands 2½ Guilder is also Ni, (10g).

Italy's 20 & 50 Centisimi ('08 thru '36 & '19 thru '35) are Ni. I found 4 of them last spring. The 1 Lira ('22 thru '38) & 2 L ('29 thru '39) are also Ni.

I'm more comfortable with foreign Cu and Ni than I am with CuNi. But, the UK pre decimal Crown and decimal 25 Pence weigh 28.28 grams. They seem to come and go in the foreign coin boxes. The most common one seems to be the Churchill Commemorative. A truly butt ugly coin... The MV is over 25¢.

I love the british one and two pence copper coins!
The 2 pence coins are the perfect size and weight for bartering.

Ah thanks BG! I totally forgot about the French Francs even though they are one of my top hoarded foreigns. They are one of the most plentiful to be sure.
