I'm going to get my 1st batch of coins from the bank on Friday, and I'm wondering which one gets silver the most often per roll, bag, and/or box? Nickels, Dimes, Quarters, or Half Dollars? Which one to go for? or should i stick to good old copper? I'm a beginner and would like to find something interesting on my 1st time, (All I have are two wheats, a 1939 nickel and a misplaced mercury dime). And how many coins are there per box? and I'm thinking like exchanging $50 max for the 1st time. Thanks guys

I hand sorted, by date, 22,000 pennies over one weekend last summer, with my kids and one of their friends. While watching telivision. It was fun. We found 97 wheat pennies; 0 indian and steel. 22% were pre-1982 copper.
From the posts I see, nickles seem to yield more consistent silver (war nickles, with the big mint mark on the reverse).
Dimes and qtrs are also probably consistent, but lower %.
Half dollars are really a crap-shoot ---- you can easily find 3 consequitive 0-yield $500 box/bags. Or you can hit a rich $500 box/bag with 10 or more silver coins. Very erratic.
All in my opinion, from my experience. Its just borrowed money that you will return to the bank. Pick one, and give it a whirl. If it doesn't satisfy, pick you next favorite. Then start over. |

| I average at least one buffalo nickel or war nickel per box of nickels. With pennies I always find something. I average about 15 wheats per box, with the most being 35 and the least being 4. A box on nickels is $100, pennies is $25, dimes I believe are $250, and halves are $500. While you are at the bank you could always just ask if they have loose halves because those don't take a large investment, and you can get really lucky sometimes. |

| I just go from bank to bank looking for halves. I think only once did I come home empty handed. sometimes it is only 1 sometimes 20 or more. it is like fishing or hunting. some days are better than others. |

| When looking, copper will yield copper and wheaties but halves when you find then will give a better return. |

I just search half dollars. I get four $500 boxes a week. I average 7 silvers per box. Some boxes have nothing, others a whole lot. My best box this year was last week: 65 40%ers and 15 90%ers. I had other boxes with as much as 39 90%ers (14 Walkers, 18 Franklins, and 7 1964 Kennedys) in it.
I think you should give half dollar searching a try and see what it produces for you in your area. Even if you don't get the boxes of coins, customer wrapped rolls (CWRs) are the best. Ask for the CWRs and see what you get. |

Half CWR rolls are $10, twenty coins in the roll. |

| I agree with the prior posters ---- try several things, and don't give up on halfs. I am in a real half dollar drought where I am, so I may dabble in some nickles, which I have never looked at before. I think for half's the local is very important, and it seems to differ in different locations. The pacfic northwest is probably not a good place right now, but other areas may be. Especially if no one has made the rounds to the small banks recently. |

I've searched around $2000 in halves and found two 40% silvers.
It would be faster and cheaper to collect pop cans, turn them in, and with that money buy silver.
Somewhere, I need a new strategy. It gets discouraging if you've never been graced by the silver queen à la Country. |

| My bank didn't have halves sadly, i managed a $25 box of pennies though, it was heavier than expected, i only found 5 wheats. Not much copper either maybe 15%? possibly lower. I did get a 1938 nickel though and a 1939. Oh well it was fun :D |

This is my opinion:
Quarters: NOT worth searching through. You may occasional hit some silver but 99% of the time you will get skunked!
Dimes: I have seen a LOT of dimes sorted out. Average seems to be 3-4 per $1000. If your doing this by hand its to time consuming to make it worth your while.
Nickels: I havent done very many nickels but from what I have heard and seen its really hit or miss.
Pennies: If your going to sort for copper I would go ahead and get a Ryedale. National average seems to be 30%, but will get adjusted by your lcoation.
Havles: Best bet for finding silver. Key it to find small little banks that don't want to pay to send their halves in so they just keep them. |
