I a nice little score of nickels from two customer rolls. They both contained all 1938 to 1949 nickels however they did not have one war nickel with the possible exception of the 1942 P I found. I understand both silver and non-silver variations were minted. So does anybody know how to tell them apart?
There is a quick and easy way to find out. On the reverse of a War Silver Nickel there will be a large mintmark (a 'P' in this case) above the building. The ones that do not have this large mintmark is of the normal variety.
Silver 1942 nickles have a big "P" or "S" on the reverse above Monticello. The 1942 non-silver nickels have either no mintmark (Philadelphia mint) or a small "D" next to Monticello on reverse.
1942 Philadelphia 5c - both types 1942-D Denver 5c - non-silver only 1942-S San Francisco 5c - silver only
The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety-first instead of duty-first, the love of soft living, and the get-rich-quick theory of life. – Theodore Roosevelt
