I decided to hoard a few nickels so I randomly decided to bid on a set of Westward Journey Nickels in mint boxes just for giggles.
The auction was 30 sets of P and 30 sets of D. I.e. face value of $120.
So I bid $121.
I didn't win, of course. However, the seller offered me a "second chance offer" and so I bought that.
So it's a great deal for me even if I treat them just as nickels since I get them for $121 - $2.42 (eBay Bucks) - $1.21 (cash back on CC). So I buy them under face :) Which I have never been able to get US coinage for before :)
However, why on earth did this seller do this. Those sets are sold for over face value by the mint and routinely go for a fair bit over face on eBay. And, the main reason is getting face value should be fairly easy and he got that less shipping ($8) and less paypal and ebay fees (another $11.18 according to my fee calculator).
So he nets $102.82 for face value of $120.
Why on earth would anyone do this? What possible motivation could there be.
NOTE: I waited until I actually received and counted them before posting as I was thinking I might get scammed :)

That is very strange. I noticed that gift cards sell for less than their face value. So when I got selected to be in the eBay Bucks program, I started buying gift cards to Wal Mart. My mom shops there every week, on Thursday. So now, she just buys the gift cards from me and I make the 2% back. I only buy from sellers with 100% feedback. But it is weird that people would be willing to take that loss, in both of those scenarios. |

I think the GC where gifts, and they rather have the cash then the limitations to a certain store. I had a 500buck GC, I would've taken a 50buck hit to have the cash, instead of buying crap at a store. |

Maybe the nickels were a gift too and he just wanted to unload them. |

For the gift cards, sometimes there are opportunities to buy the gift card for half price. Some local radio stations are always offering a certain number of &50 gift cards to a different places for $25 |

I have actually sold gift cards on ebay for more than their face value! There are some lazy or just plain dumb people out there! I'm with Neckro...rather have the cash than more plastic imported junk. |

Maybe the guy just needed the money on the nickels and just wanted to dump and be out of them. |
