Since you guys helped me identify a die clash prisoner zinc penny (thank you), I have wasted much hand sorting time unsuccessfully looking for other error zinc cents. Eventually I will get back to the serious business of copper bullion collecting.
One thing I have noticed on zinc cents 1983 - 1999 is the background finish on AU coins. On most it is smooth and shiny. Three other finishes are less common. One is a spatter finish like little droplets of copper was sprayed over the planchet. Another finish is like the grain of wood a series of parallel lines. Last I have noticed almost a clothlike finish of criss-cross lines. I don't know if it has to do with how the coins are plated or the result of the stamping process. Any ideas?
well the "sprayed on" is caused by the mixture not being right. Woodgrains are something some people collect. As far as the cross like finish I am not sure of
