Well, last night I got a penny in a nickel roll and got a very thick button in place of three dimes in a dime roll.
That got my few brain cells bouncing around and I believe that I am remembering correctly that it was just about this time of year least year when I started getting shorted in a lot of rolls and finding plastic coins, and other stuff in the rolls. It was bad enough that I almost quit this hobby as I was pretty new to it and thought that it would always be like that. And, the shortages and oddities made it less than fun some days. Then things evened out and were pretty much going along normally --whatever normal is!!!
Then when this happened to me again last night I began to wonder if this was sort of a seasonal thing. I know when we had our business for over ten years that we noticed many seasonal cyclical things and I just wondered if people are more hard up at this time of year to where they would intentionally short rolls and put in oddities, or if it might be kids bored over a long summer break from school, etc.
I know times are tough for most of us now and yet the rolls seemed to be pretty much right on target for having the correct amount of coins and type of coins, etc. even with this tough time, until last night.
Anyone else out there finding more than the normal amount of strange stuff???
Good luck in your searches! Enjoy.

This is the reason most of us don't do quarter rolls.. aside from the low silver percentage. Favorite trick is to substitute a nickel for 2 quarters.
Take a scale with you and check the weight of rolls before accepting them. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

| Times must be really bad here. Decided to try sorting some nickels and got 17 $1 Peco. Value not even worth a nickel. Guess I will send them back in my dump bag. Interesting, I have never seen these even though we live in far West Texas. |

I think the exchange rate makes that 17 worth over $1. (my x-rates table shows me 13.03 pesos to the $ |

| I had stopped getting CWR dimes or quarters from my local credit union, because the abuse is so blatent. Since I was buying every coin turned in at my local credit union, I requested identifying info on the rolls, in case that sort of thing happens. They have gone back to people's accounts and made adjustments on more than one occasion due to me telling them the rolls were shorted. I did get a Brinks roll that was short 5 dimes recently. |

| So, I guess they are worth more than a nickel. A Mexican Cafe about 30 miles from here supposedly takes pecos for payment of your meal or they were taking them a couple of months ago according to news. Maybe there is a free meal in them or maybe just a coke. |

I'm glad they made it right for you. But, that is a two edge sword I would not be comfortable with. Dipping into accounts on someones word, that is not cool. Not saying you would, but what is stopping a scammer from deliberately lying?

I was having issues with CWR nickels a while back, lots of pennies and 38-39 coin rolls. It was so bad I was avoiding them for quite a while. In fact, now that I think about it, it was late last summer/early fall. Now, I am having no problems with them. Even had some of my best recent finds in them. Life (and the universe for that matter) is cyclical.

| I haven't had any problems, except the other day I got a piece of foam in place of 2 nickels. |

Never been foamed. But the right scale will fix cover you for most of these situations. Small scales work fine if you are only doing a few rolls. Just verify weight of each roll. If you are picking up lots of rolls, then a vendor scale will work fine. You pile all the rolls on top and it tells you if any are short. |

| Only receiving dimes in place of pennies in my bank rolls so far, maybe a few canadian cents thrown in there from time to time. Hearing all this is making me really not want to search dimes or nickels any time soon. |

We don't mean to scare you off. It's just that my mind works strangely sometimes and seems to want to categorize or organize into time lines or something similar. So, when this happened again it brought up last year when I had just begun to search and really was discouraged and didn't realize then that is is NOT an always occurrence. Plus, if you are lucky enough to find the occasional dime in a penny roll then that will help you make up for it.
BUT, the biggest thing to understand about my musings is that I am far from being a big time sorter. The bank has told me that I am their largest user of rolled coins and when I swap out, I only swap out FOUR ROLLS of dimes at one time, from five to maybe 25 rolls of nickels at one time. And, once or twice up to fifty rolls of pennies at one time. And, quite often now, the bank can not give me rolls that don't already have my mark on them, so I just cash in for FRNs and go to another branch. And, I guess I really know in my heart that it will all even out, it is mainly just my strange brain trying to "worry this out" and figure out if there might really be a pattern or something to all of this unusual stuff in the rolls.
SO, with all of that said......I do thank all of you for your patience and my quirkiness with this hobby.
Enjoy. |
