I'd like to raise chickens, but not allowed to raise agricultural animals in my town.

The government can't even keep itself out of people raising chickens. Roosters I can understand, but hens?

It's a matter of local ordinances. Personally, I think it'd be easier to get away with raising rabbits in the city, since they don't really make any noise.

Speaking of rabbits, any insight on my question here?: You must be logged in to see this link.

Seeing more articles like this lately. Notice how they don't take a mocking tone anymore?

home-raised eggs are a lot more nutritious for you than factory eggs. they don't have hormones and chemicals and the chix are likely to have eaten a better diet under better conditions instead of meat byproducts in sardine-like coops.

Buying:
Peace/Morgan G+ at $15.00
copper cents at 1.3X
wheat pennies at 3X

A cackling hen can be as loud and annoying as a crowing rooster, if not more so.

If you have the room, they are not that hard to raise. They don't have to free range, but do need to be allowed to move about in a properly sized fenced in yard. Along with a roosting shed (the chicken coop)to sleep at night with several nesting boxes so the hens have a place to lay eggs. Don't ever walk in there with bare feet.

I raised them when I was in school. I had the Bantam trophy rooster at the County 4-H fair when I was in the 5th grade. My laying hen was a blue ribbon winner.

Yeah, lots of people have pet rabbits (also some wild ones) so it wouldn't be too hard.
My cat killed a baby one, anyone know if I can eat it? She brought it to me yesterday afternoon, so it has been in the fridge for 25 hours.

Also, I wonder if you could get away with quail?
Do they make lots of noise?
Could I keep them in an indoor cage most of the time, but let them out in a larger one for 5-7 hours a day?
Anyone know where I can get some info on raising them.

Probably not a good idea. Rabbits can have worms, ticks and other nasty little critters this time of year, they can also have spotted liver disease. You should have someone show you how to "spot" it (pun intended). It is transferable to humans. Wear gloves when cleaning.

I love a tasty rabbit.......

Quail are fairly quiet. It would be tough, I think to get them to transfer cages. I'm not sure they would cooperate. Oh, by the way, snakes love them. We lost everyone we had to one. However, we got him because after eating them, he was too fat to leave the same way he came.

The fridge I put him in is going to the dump next week so I don't have to worry about contamination. I am not all that fearfull but I would want someone to show me how to spot the disease. I have family friends that hunt rabbits and 'coons so they can show me.

I will look into quail some more.

Since chickens lay eggs. Maybe posting the many uses of eggs?

Can't shells be used for fertilizer?
Or at least added to the compost pile.

I have 20 chickens myself (18 hens and 2 roosters) love those fresh eggs and the little girl loves helping me feed them!
jtm3 you are correct the eggs are good for the compost pile. I lay a layer of old hay in the bottom of the coop and rake it all out about once a week and add it to the garden also (tilled in the ground) makes some pretty crops!
