Hello everyone!
I'm new to this and after reading your discussions on technique, I have an important question.
I've read in a few posts that some people pick up from Brinks banks, and then dump at Dunbar banks. I can understand why you'd not want to re-sort your own dumps... but how can I figure out whether my banks are Brinks, Dunbar, or else?
Also, any related background info would be helpful. Remember, I'm quite new to this.
It sounds like applying this knowledge would make a real difference in half hunting. Up until now I've sorted $1300 in halves in my town and found only NIFC.
Thanks in advance for taking your own free time to educate me on this!

I think you read my post. That's how I do it.
I think you could ask your bank who services the coins for them. My Dunbar dump bank is a small regional bank in my area. You've just got to go around your neighborhood and find out which is which. You will need to have accounts in two entirely different banks to get two different service providers.
Brinks banks distribute rolls with Brink's wrappers. In my neighborhood, they do not have coin counting machines and want rolls rewrapped when you deposit. Occasionally, I visit other Brinks bank branches nearby to tap whatever half rolls have come in from other customers.
Select a dump bank with multiple branches to dump coins. That way you can rotate your dumps. I use 9 branches to dump and keep track on a spreadsheet.
The Dunbar bank I use for dumps, provides NF String rolls to their customers. This bank has the bank coin counters. I bring them canvas bags and they dump the coins in for me and then give me the CASH. I do not dump at one Dunbar branch. This branch will sell me the bank plastic bag even if it is not full. Also, they sell me 2009 quarters, so I treat them kindly. However, no silver found this way yet. I guess someone else is dumping there.
To be honest, I stumbled upon this as I got sick of re-wrapping one day, and found a bank that took the coins loose. When I helped the teller lugging in my canvas bags to the coin room, I noticed that the bank plastic bags on the floor going back to the FED were marked "DUNBAR". I knew already that my source bank was a Brinks serviced bank. I knew right away that this method would work for me so that my dumps went far far away. I've continued this way ever since - source bank Brinks, dump bank Dunbar (multiple branches to spread the dumps around).

| Is there any way to tell by the type of wrappers or boxes which company services the bank? |

I think it would be easier just to ask the bank tellers. |

Yes, buy a $25 box of Pennies or $500 Box of Halves and read the name on the box or the wrapper is a pretty easy way to figure it out. You can ask, but most of the time they won't tell you what with the advanced security imposed legislated after Sept 11, 2001 to remove your freedom keep you safe. PS-Plastic wrapper=Brinks in my neck of the woods. |

tailwinds, welcome. Just ask the bank what armored car service they use. They'll tell you. It's not a secret or anything. If you can get a bag of pennies from the bank that will sometimes reveal the service.

Live free or die. Plain and simple.
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. | A couple minor points. Sometimes branches of a large bank will use different armored services. US bank in the NorthWest has 2 different armored services, by branch region. So you should ask each branch. Also, with regard to the selling of the bags from the counting machines, most big banks will tell you that is just not allowed ---- but it is. I have bought those bags on occasion from almost every bank that has a machine. It just requires a friendly teller who has the time to do an additional transfer, and the inclination to do you a favor. I never press the issue. My half dollar fetish is pretty severe, so I don't want to annoy or inappropriate language off any bank. Small banks are most likely to sell you the bags, but I have bought them from US, Key, and Wells on rare occasions when a senior teller who knew how things really worked felt charitable. |

| Welcome tailwinds to the obsession! I had to chuckle because my pickup banks are Dunbar and drop off are Brinks. LOL! Knock on wood, I have not received anyone's dump bags, yet. In fact the bags appear to be coming mainly from other banks BOA & Wachovia in the western part of the state, and I suspect from lobby coin counters. I'm having nice finds! |
