I've been noticing a decline in the number of eBay listing for 999 bullion as well as junk coin lots. I'm comparing today's activity with the activity of 3 months ago or earlier.
For example, I have some saved searches in the coin and paper money category that take me to the listings ending soon for auctions over $20. In times before, the first page of the saved search would all be ending within an hour or so. Now, the bottom of the page has listings ending in 4 to 5 hours... that's a big decline in listings!
I wonder which factor is influencing this phenomenon the most: 1) eBay and PayPal fees driving out sellers 2) fewer buyers with disposable income 3) decline in willing sellers of coins/silver 4) some other reason
Any thoughts / ideas?

| I read lots of forums, and sellers irl at shows. The fee's drive them out of that scene, and the scam buyers who do chargebacks and file false claims. |
Trolling is an art. |

| There's a little bit of talk about this on another forum I joined recently that is primarily Australian. It seems the number of bullion listings on eBay Australia are roughly half of what they were 2-4 weeks ago. |

| well the summer time is generally a slower time for numismatics, but I don't know if that would influence silver activity as well. |

I think that alot of people who buy and sell silver find that after the fees there's not a lot to make if any in the short term.
Also I think a lot of people are hoarding it for the long term. |

| I think all the fees are driving sellers away. I know I won't list smaller items on Ebay anymore. On a smaller item all profit goes to Ebay. I don't know how these people do it that sell a lot of $5.00 items after you give up 15 to 20% for all the fees there isn't much left. |
COPPER - the "poormans" precious metal!!!
SELLING - $100.00 face copper shipped to you for $189.00 machine rolled or bagged - PM me if your interested. |

I read in the business news today Ebay will be offering a 20% discount on final value fees for sellers with high feedback ratings. There was no mention of powerseller status or such. |

| I think the dis-satisfaction with ebay and fees has been present for some time...not a new phenomenon that would have recently changed listings in silver. |
The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities. |

I agree. Ebay has not made any major changes for a while that would discourage sellers. The average batch of 90% coins seems to be going for between 10.5 and 11 times face. Even accounting for postage and fees, it is a considerably better price than most dealers will offer.
The lack of sellers could be just a phase that will reverse itself in a couple weeks; or it could be that the amount of 90% coins for sale at these price levels is beginning to dry up. I received a roll of silver Roosevelt dimes in the mail today. These guys won't be hitting the market in the foreseeable future. The fact that the economy and the stock market "appear" to be stabilizing may be tamping down demand and prices. . . for now. Or perhaps its just Wolvesdad's summer swoon theory. |

I just got this email from Ebay about fee discounts.
We're making some exciting changes to make trading on eBay faster, easier, and more rewarding for sellers that deliver great service and quality.
New eBay Top-rated seller status Beginning in October, sellers that meet the new PowerSeller program requirements and have an excellent track record with buyers (measured by very few low--1s and 2s--detailed seller ratings) will get fee discounts, increased visibility for their listings, and a new Top-rated seller badge that will replace the current PowerSeller icon on view item and other member profile pages.
The sales dollar volume requirement for the PowerSeller program and the new Top-rated seller status will also be lowered to include more sellers. That means lower volume sellers that create great buyer experiences will be recognized and rewarded right along with the "big guys." Remember, you can list 5 items for free every thirty days--and pay only if your item sells. If you use your free Auction-style listings each month, you'll be more than half way to meeting the new lower listing threshold and could have the potential for becoming an eBay Top-rated seller and PowerSeller! |

I guess the summer swoon is not over. 2 weeks have passed and still no pickup in the listings. The last item on my saved search ends in 15 hours!

I have noticed. While there had been some people die then the junk is sold- I got a few deals. Note that back in the fall the live.com had SWEET deals on cash back. What a way to buy eagles and a few rolls get 35%-30% back!!! Then when that money is available pick up some more.
Postage did go up a few weeks ago. Also the rules with Paypal and ebay and nonstop with fees so much so that one is lucky to break even on sales...
IMO the fees between paypal AND ebay- which is a package deal- have put the prices up the profit margin is slim- - slimmer.
I notice when there is a great deal is it snapped up with in 20 minutes.
Speaking of sales- I bought some dimes from down under and I sure hope they are actually shipped- I am not a fan of long delivery times.
I had one seller who must have been evicted and not come thru - the time filing a dispute ties up the money when frankly I have bills to pay---
So the lessening of the cash back is certainly one factor.
The rise in postage (seems small but was more like 5%)
The barrage of rules... paypal is now "holding" 20% of monthly funds for 60 days-- I seen...
It is tempting to be cute and send people a penny- so as to trigger the 30 cents transaction fee.
lol.
OH- I did have 2 sales where rather then refund the paypal- they simply dropped to cash into the shipment- so as to balance the error. |

PayPal Takes Bite Out Of User's Funds, Calls It 'Rolling Reserve' By Phil Villarreal, 9:20 AM on Tue Aug 11 2009, 5,638 views
In addition to tacking on some sneaky new fees, PayPal apparently has instituted another off-putting practice on some accounts. According to reader Melissa, the online money changer was taking 20 percent off of her monthly sales and keeping it in reserve in case a customer initiated a chargeback.
Melissa explains:
My company has had a Paypal account for 7 years now. We do most of our sales (tickets for tours) online and have good credit, etc.
Recently, on July 1, without any notification or explanation whatsoever, Paypal has (daily) deducted 20% of our money from sales and put it into a "Rolling Reserve" account, each transaction of which they are holding for *2 months*. Our bank account is linked to our Paypal account so any chargeback (we've had 2 in 7 years) comes directly out of our bank account if we have no money in our Paypal account. We are a small business and we have employees to pay. I think that a 20% hold for 2 months on money paid to us is excessive. We weren't notified either — is that legal?
This is just a bad business practice on the part of Paypal, and I want others to be aware of it. I talked to a Paypal representative and they could not give me an answer as to why this fee was instituted, other than to say that they were filing a complaint from me to have it removed.
After some more haggling, Melissa got the reserve albatross removed from her account. PayPal sellers, be on the lookout for a similar battle. |
