Found this '48 in a Brinks box today. I have found a few in the past. A '40 and the plated '51 and '52, sometimes called "blue" nickels. According to jin.coy's list, this year was one of the lower mintages, about 1.8 million. King nickels are far and few in my parts.

Nice find. They are rare around me as well.

Deal

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

Nice find. 1948 dated coins in all denominations had low mintages because for most of the year the mint was producing 1947 dated coins with a special mintmark to distinguish them from the "real" 1947's. The 1948's don't have the phrase "et ind imp" (and Emperor of India) because of india's independence and there was a long delay in getting the revised george dies from england, so instead of making 1948's with incorrect information they added the mark to the 1947 dies and made those while they waited. 1948 dollars often go for $1000+ from what I understand.
