A friend of mine gave me a small box of wheats mostly 1944 thru 1958. I want to give him a fair price. What's the going rate?

| I tried to use Ebay as a guide for the going rate, but prices are all over the place. It seemed that when shipping is added to the final bid, the going rate was around 7 to 8 cents each. Is 4 cents each what they go for at a coin show? |

| In bulk, 4 cents each (including shipping) for common wheats will be a sure sale. Bump it up to 5 cents each, and you can sell them, but it may take awhile to find a buyer. |

| Yeah 4 cents each is what they seem to trade for here on the forum (4 cents each delivered). When I buy off of Craigslist, I usually get them for 3 cents each in bulk. Most turn out to be common dates, but occasionally there will be a slightly better date in the batch. I usually just hold those in the stash. Coin shops here pay 2-3 cents per wheat so use that for what it's worth. |

Here is a link. Don't know how accurate the information is here. Maybe a true wheat cent expert can review and comment on the values listed in the chart.

Sell them on EBAY and let market forces tell you what they will go for. Nothing against the guys on the forum here but they tend to be a "frugal bunch" or so I've been told. Everyone here wants a screaming deal and you'll do better selling them on EBAY (use flat rate shipping box to calculate shiiping or you'll get burned). I made out out WAY BETTER selling wheatson EBAY even after all the EBAY/PAYPAL fees the guys here scream about.
Trust me as I've sold them both here AND on EBAY. I made lots more selling them on EBAY. |

| You will get less than 4 cents a piece after all the fees are taken out on EBAY if you are truthful and sell them as commons. But if you make up great story like most people do and sell them as "UNSEARCHED" you might get a little more. You know like you found them in the basement of your Grandpa that past away 10 years ago that used to run a gum ball machine route back in the 30's. |

Hey, that's my story! NDFarmer is right; with the listing fee, the final value fee, the two PayPal fees and shipping, you probably won't make much more at all there than here. |

You could make out better on EBay even after fees are taken out, but a couple of points I want to make.
1) Here on realcent, we are like minded and from reading people's posts, you get to know them in a way. On EBay, you are dealing with complete strangers who may or may not try to scam you. Personally I am willing to sacrfice some profit to "keep it in the family" and reduce the risk of getting scammed by someone on EBay or having a non paying bidder force me to relist the item because they changed their mind.
2) On EBay the only payment options you are allowed to advertise are Paypal and payment in person. Of course you can accept other payment methods, but you are not allowed to advertise as such. Here on realcent, you can advertise and accept any payment option you wish.
3) EBay limits your selling timeframes (1, 3, 5, 7 or 10 days for auctions) or you can sell as a fixed price auction which can be for 30 days or good until cancelled (you will pay a higher percentage of final value fees with this).
4) On EBay sure you will get a bigger audience. But you also compete against many more sellers. Here our buy it now area is usually 2-3 pages versus the huge number of pages on EBay. On the bay, your auction can get lost in the shuffle. Here yours get bumped to the top if you edit the price/terms or if someone replies in the thread.
5) On Ebay, if a buyer stiffs you, your only recourse is to ask for a refund of the final value fees and to have a non paying strike against the buyer (big deal). You don't get your listing fees back, and then you have to start over again. Here, we allow full feedback of members for transactions.
Just like any other transaction venue, there are pros and cons to both so you have to weigh all the variables to determine what's the best venue to go with.
Personally the extra profit I can HOPE to make on EBay is not worth the hassle. I've been selling on EBay since 2000, and have dealt with all kinds of buyers from bad to good, and everything in between. I get more headaches selling on there, and have had nothing but good transactions here. |
