Thanks for the link, Beau, but I'm thinking I might have a hard time selling my future wife on the idea.  Plus we don't want the neighbors to think we're nuts even before we move in. We want to give them a little bit of time before they think we're nuts!
Seriously, though, this guy has some good ideas, but I would never do ANYTHING like this that would put me on the radar of so many people. I'd much rather set up hidden rooms behind false walls to hide my family and my preps, and the bunker this guy is building is anything but secret. |

| I like the idea of hidden shallow alcoves in the interior of homes, gaining access by disguised sliding panels, or some sort. If I ever go back to a house instead of being an apartment dweller I will look for the type of interior space that could afford some remodeling without giving it away that there was space missing from the floor plan. Maybe a ten by five space, enough for a standup safe and some shelves. I think I'll hold off on the robocop, though |

| The house that's the leading contender among the ones my fiancee and I are looking at looks small from the outside, but it has a full, very dry and in fact well-sealed basement that has plenty of potential for creating false walls. The main floor is less than 1,000 square feet, but the basement encompasses the same dimensions so all I'd have to do is wall off maybe five feet of space out from a couple walls going all the way across the room and put up movable bookshelves or something like that in front of the entrances to each hidden compartment. There's also a lot of potential for caching stuff under the existing garden areas in the back yard. The other cool thing about this house is that it's right next door to one of my coworkers who's into canning and food storage in general. I gave her jars of dehydrated carrots and spinach recently to see how she liked them, and she said she's really hoping that I end up as her neighbor so I can show her a few things about food dehydration. I can probably show her at least a few things. |
