Anyone know the story about the quarter-sized copper Statue of Liberty token? Obverse shows the Statue of Liberty from neck up. Beneath that are the words LIBERTY (R) (C) 1982 SL/EIF, INC. and encircling the coin are the words CONTAINS AUTHENTIC MATERIAL on top and, on bottom, 1886 - CENTENNIAL - 1986
reverse has a large 100 with the words CELEBRATING SEARS NEW CENTURY over it, and below that 1886-1986
Yeah, so anyway... I can't find the printer cable. I'm too stingy to go buy another one. So I can't get good pictures of it, but I bet someone else out there knows exactly what I'm talking about. I would like the story behind these tokens if anyone knows it.

There were quite a number of Statue of liberty items for sale in the '84/'85 Sears Christmas catalogs. I got a pewter spoon with a copper insert that came with a certificate of authenticity stating that it contained metal from the statue. These items were sold to raise money for the restoration of the statue before the 100th anniversary celebration. I'll see if I can find the spoon and certificate, and post a pic. |

I have 2 of these copper tokens. I believe that they do contain the old sheeting from the statue of libertyto raise funds for the renovation. I like'em. Cool piece of history. |

I think someone was selling some of these on this site a while back. Search through the completed sales threads and you might be able to find it. |

Never mind. Looks like those threads get deleted after so long.
I remember asking how much copper was in them. |

I'm also curious to know if it is solid copper/bronze or whether it's copper from the statue plated over something else... |

I have one. It has tarnished like it is copper. Sounds like a copper cent when dropped. |

I sold some of these. I find them all the time. I think they are partly made from Statue of Liberty copper as has already been stated. I would be interested to find out how much they cost originally, or if they were free. |

I found scans of the 1986 Sears Wishbook. Courtesy of Wishbookweb.com. Brings back memories!

It's weird... It's too similar to be a coincidence - it has to be from the same company. But this is not the same coin that I have. Even the one with the same reverse (item number 13) has a different look to it. It's like they used trial strikes or something for the photographs. Hmmm... |
