I found a blank zinc/copper coin when sorting this evening. I asume it is American because it came through the Rydale on the Zinc side and it will not stick to a magnet. I was a little surprised, mabye it just slide passed the die without getting stamped. Does anyone else have any ideas why this would happen?

Canada has zinc pennies too. Compare the size and weight of the coin to known US and Canadian pennies be sure. The coin got past the stamper phase and into circulation. They are not hugely valuable (worth under a buck) but a cool find. |

sweet.
I don't know about Ca zinc planchets, but if it is a US one then it should fetch $1.50 at least if it is in pretty nice condition.
If you have a scale for small grams measurements you can weigh it and see if it is US or CA. |

I would think you could eyeball it to see if US or Canadian. Or make a Popsicle stick and pencil scale.
Composition of Canadian Cents throughout history Years Mass Diameter/Shape Composition[11] 2000present * 2.35 g 19.05 mm, round 94% steel, 1.5% nickel, 4.5% copper plated zinc 19971999 * 2.25 g 19.05 mm, round 98.4% zinc, 1.6% copper plating 19821996 2.5 g 19.1 mm, 12-sided 98% copper, 1.75% tin, 0.25% zinc 19801981 2.8 g 19.0 mm, round 98% copper, 1.75% tin, 0.25% zinc 19781979 3.24 g 19.05 mm, round 98% copper, 1.75% tin, 0.25% zinc 19421977 3.24 g 19.05 mm, round 98% copper, 0.5% tin, 1.5% zinc 19201941 3.24 g 19.05 mm, round 95.5% copper, 3% tin, 1.5% zinc 18761920 5.67 g 25.4 mm, round 95.5% copper, 3% tin, 1.5% zinc 18581859 4.54 g 25.4 mm, round 95% copper, 4% tin, 1% zinc
*Although the RCM states 2000 as the year of transition from zinc to steel, collectors have reported finding zinc cents dated as late as 2006 in circulation, while steel cents dated before 2002 are rare in circulation.
US Pennies Years Material 17931857 100% copper 18571864 88% copper, 12% nickel (also known as NS-12) 18641942 19461962 bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) 1943 zinc-coated steel (also known as steel penny) 19441946 brass (95% copper, 5% zinc) 3.11 g 1974 Experimental aluminum variety 19621982 brass (95% copper, 5% zinc) 2.5 g 1982Present* 97.5% zinc core, 2.5% copper plating
So assuming it is round, and as stated not Steel or Copper, you can figure out if it is Canadian at 2.25g or US at 2.5g by testing weight against known coins. |

It is round and looks most like the shape (edge) of the American 1 cent. I do not have asmall scale but will try the popsicle stick and pencil. |
